oil pressure gauge

I had my dash apart on the 72 CJ. It has an aftermarket oil pressure gauge that is mechanical ie. it has a tube that carries oil from the engine to the gauge itself. I noticed that while the engine is running there is about 3 to 4 inches of air in the line that carries the oil to the gauge. Does the gauge meassure the pressure of the air in the tube or does it need the oil to be inside the gauge? If the air in the line is not supposed to be there how do I bleed the line?

most of the time it has some air in it to bled it out you have to crack it enough with the motor running and can be some what of a mess
