Oil from between head and block?

Hey guys

1983 jeep cj5, 258 with around 4000 miles on it.

Now I am not too worried about this as it doesnt leave drips on the pavement, that i can tell, but I am a little curious.

It leaves the side of my block a little wet with oil, behind the distributor, and the coil (i think thats what it is, two wires out top or cylinder thing).

It is a distinct wetness that starts right from where the head meets the block.

I had to take it back to the shop about 2 years ago for a similar problem, and the builder said he re-tightened the head bolts, is it normal for them to need to be re-tightened after a while.

Should I just take the valve cover off and re-tighten them, I'm just curious if anyone else has had this issue or if it was something else.

thanks guys.

The head bolts should have been torqued to 85 pounds. If they were, it's doesn't seem likely they'd loosened up on their own, but I suppose stranger things have happened.

It could be a leaky head gasket that no amount of torquing on the bolts will fix.

Are you sure it's not your valve cover leaking?

Also I would recommend checking other sources. What you could be experiencing is capillary action, where the oil is running down from other locations.

My problem was leaning valve cover gaskets. The standard cork one never sealed the right way. Solved in the long run by using RTV.

I noticed that when it shut down, it would pool at the back side of the block, and then run along the bottom of the head.

Thanks guys, It just doesn't seem wet on the head, just the block, maybe it dries right away and its unnoticeable?

Ill go ahead and take off the valve cover and check the head bolts, just in case, and sarge did you use rtv and the gasket or just rtv, and what kind did you use?

Thanks!
