Appendix E - Engine Changes states:
The installed engine and emission controls
(for an exhaust-controlled vehicle) must be
the year of the vehicle or newer, and certified
to the same or a more stringent new vehicle
certification standard.

Also:
An “engine change” is the installation of an
engine that is different from the one which was
originally installed in the vehicle and does not
qualify as a “replacement engine”.

Mr. Ranger, this is the one detail I missed when I bought my project jeep. Knowing full well that It had the older motor but I was under the impression that If I put a howell intake TBI kit on all the smog stuff would be handled. Even talked to Howell to verify before I purchased.. I'm sticking with the idea of swapping the motor, the 304 I have in it now runs strong and will do a video taped compression test before I tear it out and sell the thing. Not sure what it's worth but thats' going to be my plan. Just can't decide which motor,

If the block has 401 cast into the sides of the block, it's not a 304. What you have there is a 401.

CSP... It is 304 on the block. I think I was reading 100 threads and craigslist postings that day when I was typing and the numbers got all jumbled in my head. Yes I have a 304 not 401... HA..

I just destroyed my radiator on a wheeling trip. I have an 86 cj7 with the 258. I will be doing the amc 360 swap and auto 727 both. If I order a radiator for an 81 cj7 for the V8 with the auto tranny cooler is this the correct one?

You can do either as long as you have sufficient clearance to the radiator. Having done it both ways in the past, my opinion that the best route is a clutched 6 or 7 blade fan from a FSJ with a shroud.

I don't believe that existed in 81. Someone correct me if I am mistaken, but the V8s did not continue in 7s into the 80s and CJ-5s never had automatics.

I think what you want to order is a radiator from a 76-79 CJ-7 304 with Quadratrac (TH400). I'd do it right the first time, so look for a HD cooling option in the parts listings. While you're at it, check the numbers against the same setup from the 80s with a 258 and HD cooling if it exists. The vendor may have the same 3-row unit listed for each application.

This is how NAXJA Midwest Chapter elected officials like to treat their resident users and former multi-year supporters.

I would replace the pilot bushing. It is in driven into the end of the crankshaft. It is only a couple of bucks for one and you can pick it up at the Zone or NAPA.

Hi all. Perhaps someone can help me here with my unique issue. I have a 74 IHC Scout with the AMC 258. I was looking at a stroker 258 engine, but after looking around it seems that the AMC 360 or AMC 401 will fit my bellhousing on my T-18 tranny, correct? Someone mentioned on another site that they used a J-30 and Ford clutch parts for an oversized clutch disk and PP over the OEM Scout specs - not sure what these are, so maybe someone can elaborate. I assume I will need to reweld new motor mounts or fab something to fit the MM for the 360 or 401 - do these have the same mounts? If anyone could help me on what would be required for an engine swap on my Scout I would greatly appreciate it!!! -oh, will I be able to use my old alternator, or pulleys, direct drive fan mounts and fan? Trying to reuse as many parts off the 258 as possible.

Would it generally be cheaper going with a 360/401 swap than going with a stroker from Golen, for example? Regarding the 360 and the 401 - are parts more expensive or hard to come by for either engine? Also, anyone know of a good reputable supplier for crate engines in either of these sizes? Thats what really interests me, getting a product that won't fall apart - read too many horror stories about Titan strokers, for example...

Glad I was pointed to this thread. I'm starting to get all the bits to do a 304 into my 75.

I have the original but rebuilt 258 from a professional engine shop from my Scrambler and a 304 from a CJ5 should I leave the original/rebuilt 258 in the Scrambler or swap to the 304. Mainly hunting and daily driver in North Louisiana, no crawling. What is the advantage to the swap and would it hurt the value of the Scrambler. Any other advice?
