OEM Air Cleaner with headers

Trying to get an OEM air-cleaner installed with lines run correctly. So far, I've found some great info here ...

Great info, but I still have a few questions, mainly because years ago (as a young/dumb Jeeper ...wondering now if it was a mistake) I installed Hedman Headers to get a horse power boost. Now, trying to get the air-cleaner working, I don't see where I would "heated-air" from for the air-cleaner. The headman headers do have some sort of manifold with a valve that I don't know what to do with, but some how I doubt that's for the heated-air:

Wondering if the headman headers don't have the an output for heated air and thought I'd check with you guys to see if someone knows or has run into this problem ... or is this just something I have to live with, i.e. slow warm-up time. Any of your thoughts/input or idea's would be greatly appreciated.

John,

The "heat box" on the factory exhaust manifold is just a sheet metal enclosure with a round lip to attach the flexible heat tube. There is no opening to the exhaust. the breather simply sucks the heated air from around the manifold.

Hears a pic of some V8 manifolds that shows the heat box on the upper one.

John,

I had the same problem as you, though mine was a stock cast iron exhaust which did not have the bolt castings in it as shown in the picture Matt supplied. I ended up with my own sheet metal enclosre around the exhaust, bolted to the block with the flex hose going from it to the OEM air cleaner I installed.

So it is possible to retrofit, just a pain.

Yours was one of the more helpful postings on the topic, so Thanks very much again! Yeah, I was wondering if it was something like that ... I knew it couldn't be blowing exhaust back into the air-cleaner; that's just silly. But, I wasn't sure if there was some sort of special valve or whatever - I just didn't know ...

Hooker Headers used to make a bolt-on kit that had basically a little heat stove that bolted around one of the header tubes with an outlet that you'd attach to the air cleaner snorkel. I just did a quick search but came up empty. You might give Summit a call and see if the thing is still available.

Aftermarket kits for this purpose used to be common back in the day, but with so many cars running EFI today, they seem to have gone the way of the dinosaur. You'll probably have to fabricate something to attach to a header tube (could probably just use a hose clamp to hold it in place).

Hey Matt!

Absolutely, I'll make sure I get back here to do so!!

BTW - if you don't mind, I have a quick question related to putting air-cleaner back in order ... since you're around. What is the fitting that goes in the air-cleaner to connect the PCV system? I can't find anything there???

Also, I'm a little confused - I think I need one PCV valve at the front of the engine, which is a T, since I have a 1982:

1982-1986 Jeep CJ with 6 Cyl T shape

... then the one for the rear of the engine would be the Elbow, Valve Cover Emissions:

The rear intake hose connects to a similar sized nipple on the side of the air-cleaner housing.

Your PCV valve and elbow appear to be correct.

Sorry, to need clarification ... I know you're busy, and I know you post Allot on the topic of air-cleaners etc. Do you have any idea where I might find a rear intake hose connector? Is that what you are calling out in this post for #6 ...

I'm not sure I understand your question.

The little square filter element goes inside the air-cleaner just opposite the nipple that the PCV intake hose connects to. The nipple is built into the air-cleaner housing.

Thank you Matt!!

I was just asking to make sure I understood the setup. The air-cleaner I have (bought off eBay) is missing the little square filter element and is also missing the nipple that's built into the air-cleaner housing. I've searched the usual sites, Quadratec.com, jeep4x4center.com, etc. and even teamgrandwagoneer.com, but no-luck. Really though, with your description and the picture that was posted, I should be able to rig something fairly easily. Then again, if you know of anywhere that I can find an OEM part, I'd love to be able to just order it.

... and, then again, maybe I'll get lucky and this is some super generic part that is sold in most auto parts stores, so I guess I should try that as well.
