Manual brake version air cleaner assembly on the I6 engine will look like what is pictured.

Ok I see the difference now. makes sense. Yeah mine has power breaks.

Thanks all for the help and advice. I am hoping to start on my project soon but with the wife possibly going back to nursing school to finish and as a result she will shutting down her daycare and working part time funds may be limited for the next year or so.

VACJ7, I will take it. I will contact you soon with info etc.

I am looking for information on what would have come on a '79 258 2 bbl. with power brakes. I think they were different than what has been shown here so far. Thanks in advance.

UR,

Here is a picture of what I think is an earlier version of the 258 air cleaner with power brakes. One difference I see is that the intake snout has one vacuum controled door instead of two. I got this picture off the web and don't remember who I stole it from. Note it is very very similar to the air filter on Keith460's 1984 engine in earlier posts.

Regardless this is the style air cleaner you will need. A more difficult part to find is the bracket which attaches the air cleaner to the top of the valve cover. It is possible to make one.

If you find a cleaner on Ebay, ask about the bracket.

That is what I have as shown in the photo attached. I always assumed mine was from a later CJ but perhaps not. I was unsure because I was never able to locate a photo of a stock 79 with a 258 2 bbl. and power brakes. All photos I've located of completely stock 1979s were 304s with power brakes and 258s with non-power.

I looked a little more and found this picture from a 1979 CJ7 with a stock engine. The valve cover is correct for 1979 and I think the air cleaner is too....all but color!

Once again notice differences in this one and those posted by Keith460 (1984).
