Nutter Bypass

Does anyone have any info or pics on how to do this to a 304? I've been researching it and all the pics and info is for a 6 cylinder and I have an 86 with a 304. Any help and pics of the firewall plug with this done would be great. Thanks

I didn't think 304's ever came with computers. Did you somehow incorporate the computer from your 258 when you changed to a 304?

I think the reason (and I could be wrong) that you can't find a Nutter bypass writeup for a 304 is because it doesn't apply.

Your right they didn't for the year but I just need a quick way to hook up the motor so it will run though the dist, ign module, and coil before it snows again.

What, you think I wasn't working on it? I got a life you know.

If your using the 6 cylinder computer to run the V8 and the PO didn't bypass the computer for the ignition then just follow the plans for the 6 cylinder "nutter bypass". there are better ways to do this. I would find a V8 wiring harness for an 80-83 CJ and plug it into your firewall connector. It's a direct plug in on the 86 connector. Maybe painless will sell you just the wiring harness for that year engine compartment.

Here are the details on the frewall plug for an 84 to 86.

It's the so forth that can get to be the devil in the plans.

Here is the schematic for an 80-83 Cj with a V8:

Click on the picture for a bigger view.!!

If you follow out the wires from the 86 Firewall plug you'll find the appropiate wire that you can hook up to your V8. The only setback will be the ORANGE wire that goes to the Computer. You'll see two orange wire right next to each other just cut and splice these together neatly. Now you will have to ADD a PURPLE wire into your harness wich you don't have in your 86 Harness. Look for the purple wire from the distributor to the computer and clip off the purple wire at the computer end. Now splice in some more PURPLE wire and run it over to the ICM. Unfortunatly It's not as simple putting new terminals into the plugs. That would be too easy. The best would be to find the connector for the ICM with 4 wires and splice them in. But who likes splices and the will eventually fail unless soldered and heat shrink tubing is added. But a harness that old will have 'issues' with corrosion on the strands making it difficult to solder properly.

When I modified my 84 harness to use on my 76 CJ5 I just took the harness from an 79 CJ7 that went from the ICU to the distributor and got rid of the 84 connections. It was simple and made for good connections. I actually have a 79 V8 harness but it won't fit your connector. You can make it fit because the terminals unplug real easy but i want to sell the harness with my 360. (If the guy ever buys it. )

Here is some detail on what we are trying to do:

Here is the detail on the firewall connector for the 83 V8

This view is like you pulled the plug out and your holding it in your hand looking at the face of the connector with the wires going out the back. Normally called "front view"

If you still need pictures I can get them for you tonight, I did mine a few weeks ago and still haven't buttoned the wiring up due to other issues. On my Jeep the purple and orange going to the distributor were twisted around each other. There are 2 other solid orange wires exiting the firewall plug and heading toward the fuse panel, you have to be careful to trace the 1 going to the ignition module.

This is very important as twisting them together will reduce picking up any interferance.

The Painless harness won't plug in to the OEM bulkhead connector, it only works with the Painless item. I went through that with mine. One row of pins is 90 degrees off from the OEM (they are horizontal rather than vertical).
Would be easier to put in a HEI, simple one wire hookup!

Yeah but HEI distributors for an AMC V8 are expensive.

i guess it's what you have more of, Time or Money.

Excellant Diagram. Took about 3 hours and now the computer is gone and Jeep now starts on the first crank instead of 10-12. Thanks again John and everyones help.
