Not TECHNICALLY a Jeep . . but, new pony in the stable

Picked this up yesterday "for the kids" of course. My 8-year old is the size of a 10-year old, and can not even fit in his Jeep Hurricane anymore. After checking out karts for months, I knew this one model, and none else, what what I wanted. Here's why - 60% - it's a Jeep - no other thing you could call it. 15% has to have room for two (my 5 and 3 year olds want to ride in it too), and 25% I have to fit in it, but so do the kids - so adjustable seat.

KenBar JP-8E Dirt Dog Streaker. This was the ONLY kart I found that hit all of these. Of course, it has not been made in years, and was not a big seller - they are rare.

LED lights in the garage combined with my cell phone camera (Damn you Moto!) make it look pinkish, it is not. Plain old red.

5 hp Honda engine runs OK to good, but it will get tuned up and carb cleaned or rebuilt. Death wobble like you read about. At this point I think it has negative toe-in, and whatever the wheels use, bushings or bearings, are shot, as both front wheels wiggle a bit.

I have A LOT to learn about small motors, the Comet drive/transmission (loose belt, pullys that move & tighten, it's all Greek to me right now), and karts in general. stuff like "float" in the calipers - It's got dual rear discs, but one seems "looser" than the other - I have no idea if it is supposed to float a bit, or be rock-solid. Now I have to join the DIY Kart forums - more timesuck while at work - D'oh!

Anyway, gonna put her in the shed until spring, as my garage is not big enough with all three cars in it for the winter. I'll likely keep you posted with the progress come April or so.

Buy plenty of metal shims. Our karts spit those out every now and then, and it's a buzz stomp for the kids when it runs but doesn't go. And you always lose them in high grass.

Too cool - nice find!

Show me in in this build thread!

What mods do you have planned for it?

OME LCOG suspension, BSERK GP bumpers, full cage, synthetic winch line, OEM graphics, etc.?

First, I want to get it safe for the kids. That means steering and good brakes. Neither one should be a problem for me to tweak, as it's all there, just new bearings and some adjustments. Then, I'll tune the engine, and make sure the torque converter is OK and the chain has the correct slack. As my son is 8, I'm not too concerned about top speed - he has a lot of learning to do.

As they grow older, I may do some power mods, but for now, safety first. I WILL be installing either 3-point or 4-point belts. Maybe recover the seats, certainly clean up a bit of surface rust & hit with Rust Bullet or something else.

Bodywork, which would be minimal, will wait a while. While I'd love to go nuts, I kind of want to keep it stock. Red, black seats with white stripe, white wheels, and decals. I may swap out the lights for some round ones (of course), but I'll mount them the same so I don't have to cut the body. Recessed LED rounds would be cool, but once you cut, you can't go back, so time will tell. I may install brake lights in the same way, or actually just one in the the back on the tiny draw bar.

At the end of the day, unlike my Scrambler, I will not have this forever, and I see this going up in value with time due to haw damn cool it is, and how rare.

Yeah, it's obvious those rectangle lights are PO add-ons. You can tell by the round parking lights. So to restore it to stock, you'd need the CJ7 and Jeep/AMC emblems, not Wrangler...

Yeah but those are still YJ fenders....

Cool though.

Needs a small snowmobile engine and tranny in there.
But then you would hog all the riding time and not let the kids have any fun.

Ya know, I got a transaxle from an all wheel steer lawn tractor, make this the front axle and I bet you can make it 4WD.

imagine the possibilities

4WD would be awesome. Way beyond my abilitlties. Its got a Comet 30 CVT, pretty standard go kart tranny. I need to take it apart and clean it. For $100 I may also just buy a Predetor 212 engine and freshen up and keep the Honda motor as a spare. Very common swapped in engine, apparently.

Some day when you do a tub off restore, post a picture of the front suspension.

If Rokon can make a 2wd motor cycle, I'm sure you can make a 4wd kart.

$2500!!! And that's with a Tecumseh engine instead of the more expensive Honda.

Well. I paid $900 for it. Its a lot of money for a used kart I guess, but I think it worth it, as a Jeep nut.

This is a well built, made in the USA kart. For what it is it is beefy.

It has no suspension of any kind. While the current gen off-road karts do, this baby is old school, like my scrambler. The front "axle" is part of the frame and just has a squared off "C" for the knuckle. I already solved 90% of the steering problems by tightening the bolts that act as kingpins I guess. I'm going to dial in some toe-in and that should do it.
