No Voltage Regulator, how to add one?

Ok, so i bought a 1977 Jeep CJ7, with a 1985 Ford 5.0 or 302 V8 installed. The thing i've noticed while during a total re-wire is there is no Voltage Regulator anywhere on the vehicle. replacing the alternator today and the alternator clearly states, external voltage regulator needed, My question is how can i install one correctly....thanks

I would just use the same stuff found on a Ford 5.0. Find out the year and model it came out of.

Are you sure the Alternator doesn't self regulate?

ivansdad 05-19-2013 08:46 PM

new alternator had a sticker, external voltage regulator needed....

If it were me and once it was, I'd find a self regulating alternator and install that. Makes life a lot simpler

Same here... the 77 was originally set up with an internal regulated alternator, so I'd do that.

Too easy. I love it when others do all the work:)
You may need to get a loom

I'm just curious why everybody wants to spend the money, time, and energy swapping in a Delco SI when there is a stock alternator already mounted. All it needs is a voltage regulator and a couple of wires. Heck the loom and the regulator should be an easy find at any u pick for next to nothing.

By the way, what alternator is on it ?
got a picture?
I think AMC V8 engines used an alternator with an External regulator.
but need to know which alternator we are talking about.

What's probably happened is when the previous owner installed the new motor he most likely upgraded to a internally regulated alternator because they are Easier to wire. Then when the current owner order a new Alternator he probably just order a alternator for a 85 ford motor, Which I am sure is still a Externally regulated alternator. More info Required to help you get this problem solved.
