Newer drive train in a cj5

Hi there, nice fourm alot of great info on it.
I have a 69 cj5 with a buick v6(cracked block) and and mismatched gear ratios, i would like to fix it stock but its out of my price range. there is a lot of road salt where i live and running cherokees with no floors can be had for like 250-400. has anyone ever taken axles/motor/transmission/t-case from a 90's jeep and put it in a cj5? I realize its alot of welding and fab work which isnt the problem, but the electricals including the guages would be troublesome and would the drive train of a cherokee simply be to long even with shorter drive shafts? just wondering if anyone has done this before or has any thoughts on it.

Jeff

Straight six is too long for for a '69 hood, 5spd is probably pushing it for wheelbase.

You want to go here: www.earlycj5.com

Even if you don't go original, finding a replacement Buick V6, maybe out of an '80s Regal, is still going to be cheaper in the long run than a drivetrain conversion. It's the little things, like driveshafts, engine mounts, clutch, adapters, etc. that really add up in a hurry. Also, your rear axle is offset, whereas the later model stuff uses a centered t-case output.

Your second best bet would be a Chevy 4.3EFI out of an S-10, an SM465 out of an '80s 3/4ton, and an adapter to D18 t-case.
