Newbie Clutch/Transmission Issue

Hey all! Thanks ahead of time for your help.

I just bought this old Jeep yesterday (1985 CJ7 with the 2.5L 4 cylinder and 4-speed manual transmission) and tonight on my drive home from work it would no longer go into 1st or 2nd gears. It felt as if the stick wouldn't let you even find the gears.

I'm not sure if the clutch has gone out, slave cylinder, or if I have a dreaded transmission issue. The clutch pedal feels soft to me but, I haven't had this Jeep long enough to really establish a baseline for what is normal.

Any ideas on things to look for and estimates on the cost of repair?

Best,

Seth

Turn the engine off and see if you can engage the gears.

If you can it is the clutch. If you can't it may be the selector lever.

If the clutch look for leaks in the system and then try bleeding it.
