Hello All!
I recently (this afternoon) picked up a 1978 CJ7 for $5,000. This Jeep is completely rust free (my bad, the Cat has rust on it......) Someone had put MORE frame skin kit in it, newer tub and harness, blah blah blah. 304/TH400/Q-Trac Part time kit. My big question is, is their a way to tell if she's got the 16% overdrive?

J/K congrats on the purchase- but seriously... pics please!
what do you mean by 16% OD, TH400's are a straight-through 3-spd 1:1 auto, no?

The part time conversion kit is where the 16%overdrive would be located JoonHoss.
I'm not sure how to tell if it's there other than cracking open the tcase.

well, just got her home, and we did some more research on this thing. It's probably worth around $8,000 to $9,000 on eBay. It literally is "perfect". the thing screams down the highway at 75 no sweat. Pics will come when this rain STOPS!!!!

so, i've been tinkering around with it a little. the high idle (~1000RPM) was making the Jeep jump into D and R as well as kinda taking it away at stoplights (it would do 20 by itself). so i unscrewed the idle screw all the way......fixed nothing. Then my mind went to vacuum leaks. I found 4. The charcoal canister cap had come off, their was a leak in one Q-Trac vacuum line, their was an open port in the carb, and then their was a line (hard) that comes off the carb (Champion) right under where the electric choke coil is held. I plugged them and it dropped about 100RPM, so it got a little better, but not correct. So this morning i took it to class. High idling again (as well as the high idle cam NOT engaging on cold start). So my next idea was timing. I read on the Emissions sticker a 304V8 w/ Auto should be set at 10 degrees BTDC. So i put the timing mark dead on with my DC Induction timing light on the stock ignition system with vacuum advance unplugged AND capped. The idle finally dropped significantly (yet it still will run w/o the idle speed screw touching the throttle). the LATEST events are 1) at idle in drive at full stop, she's shaking and sputtering, kinda like the idle's set a tad too low. 2) the Jeep when i'm driving out of a dead stop, and when i'm cruising at like 10MPH, just before 2nd gear shifts, and i give it a fair amount of throttle, she'll "cough" as if it's off time..... but then after this "cough" it's good to go...........Any ideas???????
