new to me......3 Jeeps
I am getting ready to cross sides from a YJ to a CJ but only as a trail rig not really looking at it being a DD. So here is the low down, I have been looking for an old flat fender for sometime to build a trail rig. Seeing that I live in NY finding one thats not all eaten up be cancer is hard to find. After about 2 yrs of searching, I almost decided to give up, and look for a CJ5. Well I was talking to my dad and he said if I want there is 3 Jeeps on the hill and I could have them all! I am not looking to make is show quality or anything just something to beat on in the woods at my parents which is made up of old quarries and beat down brush and trees. my dad has always been a jeep nut hes in the process of putting together a 58 Truck now and this winter we completed a 58 CJ-5. Here is what he gave to me, there are 2 MB's which he had for parts when we went to build a Military Jeep but decided to go with a GPW instead. Both are all there solid frames and actually 1 has an old flat head 4 in it, but I am looking to go bigger than that, its the old Hurricane engine. there is just a frame (MB) with springs and axels on it and also a 64 CJ-5 which runs and needs a little Carb work. The plans is to get an old beat up 3/4 ton chev. P/U that the frame is rotted on and use the drive train. I really wanted to go with a flat fender, but the CJ-5 is a solid starting point. My question is I see that there are plenty of write ups on "how to put a CJ nose on your YJ" But does anyone know if there is a way to put a MB nose on a CJ5?? is there alot of fab work with it? I imagine there is. the CJ5 is an old transportation dept vechicle, my dad said that the tranny that is in it was sort of rare its a 4spd manual. any more info on the tranny would be helpful in making decisions. i will try to get up and take pics this weekend because I know that you guys are pic whores! lol
any and all advise is much appreciated and thanks for reading my long winded post.YJbrowny ![]()

If you take a tape and mesure your front CJ5 clip and your CJ-2A/B or CJ-3B front clip, I am pretty certain you will find that the front clip is several inches narrower on the military jeeps. Ergo, you would not match up when you tryed to bolt it to the tub. You would end up looking really ***** plus you would not have enough room in the engine compartment for all of the components needed for a CJ five.
I would recommend that you take the CJ-5 frame and everything below that, and then toss on the CJ-2/3 full body on there. With that you can always go for a small buick engine to get what you want out of it. I have seen that done with great results in the past. I could be wrong about the front clip, but it sure seems like I am not mistaken there. Another good idea you might go for, it would cost less and look as good (in my opinion) you can get some tube fenders already fabbed to look like flat fenders, or make your own flat fenders. Or you could even go so far, and I have seen it done, looked pretty good actually, as to get yourself some square tube and fab your fenders out of that. I have seen them on a CJ-7 in the past, and it looked very realistic. Of course a true jeep lover would spot it, but they would just ask you tons of questions more than anything else... |

I see what your talking about with the narrowness of the MB. I really thought about fabbin my own flatties, the thoughts are cooking now. I really wanted to go with a 350. but I am still thinking. any more opinions??? I was thinking waggy 44's too. Who knows, all I need to know is start thinking long term because I only want to do this once. i dont want to get half way through and change all my plans. i need to lay down my build maybe I will work on that tonight.

Long awaited, I got caught up in a million things the last couple weeks but i got a chance to get up there and take pics. and other pics of the jeeps that my dad and I have acquired over the years.
First the 64 cj-5 4cyl Hurricaine ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() the 2 MB's ![]() ![]() check out that extension in the rear ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() and a MB frame solid, you can tell a MB from a GPW frame because the MB has a tubular front crossmember and a GPW has a channel steel one. ![]() And here is a compromise of the other Jeeps all but the restored 42 GPW in storage until memorial day weekend. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And the trusty DD!! ![]() ![]()

You need to do yourself a favor and do some research before you cut up anything. The frame pictured has a rare .50 cal mount. The CJ has a somewhat rare hood with the snorkel cut out and what looks to be either a T98 or 18 four speed (that, I would keep). Post some picts on earlycj5.com and the flatty sights to see if there is any interest. There may be some valuable parts that would be better sent to a restorer and saved. The money made could be spent on a more mundane CJ for modification.

ya I will check that out, thanks! I could take more pics of the trans and t/c so someone could better identify it for me, my dad seemed to think that it was a rare 4spd trans in it.
