New here. 71CJ5 questions

Hello everybody new to the site and to jeeps in particular. I picked up a 1971 CJ5 with the dauntless buick v6 engine with a 3 speed tranny. It has 48,XXX original miles, the frame is solid and theres just some surface rust starting to happen which I plan to take care of next year. Now to my question..

It doesn't seem to want to move when starting out in first as in I push the gas and she roars and sort of putts its way to get going. Like she doesnt have any umph to move. Do any of you have any ideas on why and or what I need to do?

Also anything I should know about these?

Start with a basic tune-up and go from there. Points, condenser, plugs, distributor cap, rotor and new plug wires. I'd almost suspect bad plug wires as a start, but the rest is probably way over due. When I had my '66 with a V-6 it wasn't running right, I lifted the hood at night and it looked like a fireworks display because of the bad wires. Plus, if they haven't been changed, plan on changing the timing chain and gears...the originals were made of mostly nylon gears and broke up with time.

'81 Scrambler w/ FI 360 AMC, 33x12.50 BFG M/T's, 5" of lift, ARB'd Dana 44's F & R, Dana 300 clocked & twin sticked w/4:1, Warn XD9000i, etc...
2002 Grand Cherokee Limited, 2008 Overland Grand Cherokee, a 1976 CJ-7 in pieces and 3 more off-brand 4x4s...............

greattt... I'm sure gears aren't cheap are they? But alright thanks I was planning on doing that when I did my oil change. Also I noticed my drivers side hub is stuck also could that cause anything as to it doing that?

Welcome to Jeepforum! There are a lot of knowledgeable folks here but if you end up needing more specifics than can be found here, there's another site dedicated to early CJ5 Jeeps: http://www.earlycj5.net/forums/forum.php

Hey, you bet. Congrats on the new (to you) CJ. I'd love to have a CJ of that vintage, but CJs are so rare around here that I'm lucky to see a CJ-7 on rare occasion.

Personally, I like Castrol 10w-30 or 10w-40, and Bosch Premium Oil filters, but the truth is it doesn't really matter as long as you change it frequently enough.

Look up what the factory recommendations are for the other fluids.
