new engine choice .. comments?

I was planning to swap out my tired old 232 with a small ford, but I just recently aquired a late model 318 core engine from a 96 dodge pickup (had low engine knock warm so my customer had me replace it) I havent seen much as far as adapters for the dodge engine and I am relatively new to jeeps so any suggestions would be welcomed

I can't help you much, but I image someone else here can. I would start with Advanced Adaptors they make all kinds of mounts and adaptors to put just about anthing in a Jeep.

thanks but I already tried them with no luck. so far it is looking like Ford is winning the battle on this swap.

What do you mean, they have 318 mounts on their site, is it a tranny issue?

Novak carries the engine mounts for the swap. It uses the same radiator as a GM swap. There's a decent choice of trannies out there that'll bolt up to the engine and with a little research you can probably come up with something that'll bolt up to your Dana 20 t-case with a factory or aftermarket adapter.

I use 2.8 v6 out of xj's or tbi's out of S-10 Jimmys or Blazers. Good strong and cheep to get ahold of. there are alot of 83 to 87 s -series trucks out there with great motors. You can go with the 4.3 as well.

2.8?!?!? I had one...never again...boat anchor. 4.3 would be a *much* better choice.

Have you checked out the NP435? They put those in some Dodge pickups.

i dont know if this is a way you would want to go but i have a friend that has a 84 cj and he just fininshed dropping in a vortec v6 from a 2000 astro van. Did not have to do a lot of mods on it. It fit perfect and it had plenty of powerfor him. Hey just a suggestion.

this is all good advice people, but I have on hand two engines one t150 trans and a very limited budget. I know the ford small block will adapt easily to my trans with a stock ford bell. will the dodge 318 mount to my trans or not?

You'll have to research that...not even a remotely common swap. It's not a matter of whether or not the T-150 will bolt up (the stock Jeep bellhousing obviously will not), it's a matter of whether there's a Mopar bellhousing that will also mate to your T-150 or if you'll have to shell out some bucks for a Novak or AA conversion bellhousing in order to retain it. If we had an easy answer for you, you'd have gotten it by now...maybe try a Mopar forum and start Googling. Honestly, if you have a very limited budget, unless you can fab up darn near everything you need yourself, then you probably shouldn't be looking at engine swaps...you're into it for $400-500 just for the engine mounts and radiator right off the bat. Adapter bellhousing if anyone even makes one is probably close to the same amount...probably better off looking at Mopar options for trans & t-case and keeping the adapters out of the mix. You'll likely need to have your driveshafts modified too.

I found it odd that Novak does make only the motor mounts for that swap- but that is the case. The SBF swap does not require an adapter, only motor mounts, a bellhousing, and some minor moving of parts-like the tranny and tcase. This will result in some custom driveshaft work, as there will be no compression left in the front shaft while the rear is too short. Jeepskate is correct, it ain't gonna be cheap. But so far, I think my SBF swap is under 300 bucks(not including the motor). Also BUT, gotta get headers(150), fuel pump(100), and fuel lines(?). Then there's the exhaust. You can do the math, it's just how much time do you want to spend on this.
