new dash, can't get light or wiper switch off old dash

in my paint job I am switching out my dash, upgrading to Laredo with no rust. . .
I got the whole thing striped out, but I can't get the light switch or wiper switch off the old dash, there seems to be some type of retaining nut but I can't get it to budge, is there a tip or a trick? almost looks like it requires a special tool. I sure don't want to bugger it,,, and I ABSOLULTY don't want to bugger the re-installation on the new dash with fresh paint.

so, how too?

Are you talking about the nut with the two slots in it? I made a crude tool to do this. Think it was 1/2 wide x 1/8 thick steel scrap. Bent the end over 90* about 1/2 or so and then used my grinder to take out the center portion. Kinda looks like a 2-pronged fork bent 90*.
