New CJ7... I think.

Well this weekend I bought a CJ7 or at least I thought I did. I ran a report on the vehicle history just cause and it turned up as an 81 CJ8 base/laredo/renegade. Everything looks good on the report.. 1 owner with 84k miles. But I went to get the tags for it (gonna be a streetable trail rig) and they told me the VIN doesn't match the registration which does not make any sense to me. They also asked me to take pictures of all four sides of the jeep and get it inspected. I don't know what this mis-match means or really what is going to happen after this. Any advice. I know the body is a CJ7.

Which number did you run that brought up the scrambler designation? The one on the regi or the one off the vin tag on the jeep? Sounds like someone at some point has switched vin tags. Not sure how things work in your neck of the woods but you could be in for a real big headache.

The sequential part of the VIN should be stamped into the frame somewhere. I recall in the older Jeeps it's in the top, near the right front shock mount. See if it matches the stated VIN or the registration.

I doubt that jeep is going to pass a state safety inspection with the flat fenders up front and the cut rear quarter panels. They are usually not cool with that on street vehicles especially ones with big tires that throw rocks up at other cars. You might want to try to get some historic tags so you can avoid having to get the safety inspection.

Take the tires off and put some stock sized road tires on it for the pics...

The VIN should be in 3 spots. Wiper motor mount, drivers side of the firewall under the master cylinder, and on top of the frame hump, passenger side rear. The rear one won't be a full VIN.

Beat it to fit, paint it to match!

Wheel, Wrench, Repeat.

The jeep has always been registered by the previous owner. The pictures turned out to be for insurance purpose and I have a friend to pass my inspection. I think it's all worked out but I'll let y'all know. I did get a temporary tag that's good for ten days till I can get inspection done.
