I started fabbing up the front bulkhead to the tub using 16 ga. sheet.

The pictures are in no particular order, so you have to just get the jist of what I did. I made the bulkhead so I could easily come back at a later date to double wall the panel if I want.

Also, the top lip is not installed yet, but it will match the lip already from the factory. Tunst out the lip is the same around the doors, so I cut it out and plan to weld them in in 3 pieces.

Enjoy!

Were you planning all along to hit the wheel opening like that, or did it just work out!? It's perfect. You're making me not like my Jeep!!!

I spent more time measuring and figuring than I ever did actual work. This is my first time with something this complex, so I'm careful to plan well ahead.

It really helps to have a CJ, a YJ, a Wagoneer, and the CJ10 all next to each other so I can measure things. I'm still needing to cut the wheel wells a tad in the front, and the way I have the rear bumper planned, it will hide the tank completely.

I'm even going to put a CJ style rollbar in the tub, so should look almost stock when I finish. In the future, I will 4-link the suspension, For now, I just have to figure out the bed mounts.

Okay I'll take it now Eric. I'll arrange shipping so that it's picked up when you're at home and can help the trucking company load it. Oh wait maybe you can keep it long enough to get it painted, then I want it for sure.

Update on the registration process

I took mine to the CID (criminal investigative division) police department to get a VIN inspection. I'm going through the steps to get registration, and that is first.

The officer made a phone call, and was told to look for the frame VIN on the passenger rear top of frame just in front of the tire location. He used sandpaper and a mirror, but did not find any numbers.

He filled out a VTR-68-A stating that "A search for number on frame rail was conducted. No number was located on engine nor on frame rail. Law Enforcement has no interest in vehicle".

He then ran the VIN number from the cab, and filled out another form saying (in a nutshell) that that VIN was clean, and could be used as the public VIN.
He then sent me to the Texas Dept. of Motor Vehicles to apply for registration.

I gave them the forms, along with my bill of sale, and they made some calls. They said that just a bill of sale wasn't enough proof of ownership, and that I should get a bonded title. They had me fill out a VTR-130-SOF (statement of fact), andf they typed up a letter for me, gave me a Certificate of title surety bond form, and told me to talk to my insurance company and get a bond for 6k.

Once I get the bond, I'm supposed to go to the tax office and get registration. I have the option to request a hearing with the county tax assessor insted of the bond, so I will check into that option first. It will be cheaper for the tax office to hear my story of how i assembled the truck out of parts, and along with my documentation, they just make a decision to grant title or not.

Either way, it's going to happen. Just a lot of red tape...

You are a very patient man! Thanks for posting up all the steps you have to go through. Of course, the results are worth the effort.

Title at last!

Today, I finished up with my endeavor to obtain title and registration on the truck. Today I was awarded a set of plates. I can now legaly drive this truck, so I will it seems move forward with the spending of copious amounts of dinero after all...

seat covers, lockers, recovery equipment, half doors, new battery, flares, you get the idea. I'm very happy right now

Dang, that was a pains in the butt... I must say, that is e one easy thing about registering a vehicle in Ca... Not as many hoops... Although I guess I have an inside line makes it a bit easier...

Glad you got things ironed out on the plates. Looks good too!!

On another note. I bet you've got some great places to wheel close to home. Looks like a mountian range off in the distance?

have you thought of moving the bed around a little to get the measurements of a cj8 or cj6, if you did this, you could potentially mount a soft top on it. just some food for thought.

Lots and lots of places to wheel if you know where to go. It's kind of like Colorado here except without the water and trees!

I don't really have a use for a soft top. With a pickup cab, I can take the doors off, the top off, and fold down the windshield and it would be as open as you can get.

If I need protection, a CJ bikini top will fit since I am going to install a roll bar in the bed. I ordered some half doors, and I have the hard doors, so I don't really see a need for a soft top. It never ever rains here anyways.

as far as moving the bed, I'm running a CJ wheelbase of around 93", and the wheel wells align with the tires. so a CJ soft top should be very close to fitting as it is. I haven't measured, but I bet it is real close.
