yes you can drive it for a while like that, but don't be surprised if some demons start showing up (lights, accessories, etc.. might act funny, garbage like that).
You should be able to get new cables at any automotive store. Even if they're not terminated on both ends, you can buy the Eye-hole style connector separately and terminate it yourself. It doesn't have to be the exact same style cable, just has to be the same gauge, if not larger, with clean contacts... IMHO, you ought to replace all of your cables, if one was that bad, likely the others aren't too far behind.

Yes, he was right, while your at it, replace ALL the battery terminals and such.
If you buy a good ground from a parts store, it 'might' come with the extra ground wire on it. Myself, I would buy marine batter terminals, and just get right length wires with eyes on both sides. Much easier to work with, and to add other things in the future. The ground on my rig is a 16" lawn mower ground wire from Wal-Mart. Very heavy duty, and if my ground to the block ever fails, this one wont fry as quickly. I've had cases were the small factory wire melts just from old age. The bigger wire will guarantee that it wont' fry anywhere near as quickly. TheJunkMan

Thanks Guys,
Replaced the cable (and all the others) for under 25 bucks... I used one with an extra ground and crimped a piece of 12ga to the firewall. Now im left with enogh wire and Eye connectors to do the whole Jeep!! Thanks Again

I was also gonna comment, a lot of replacement ground cables come with a 12-16gauge pig tail off the terminal for you to ground somewhere. I myself like to use car stereo wire for my grounds and postivebattery lead. I use red 4gauge for my postive battery and solenoid to starter. Then I use blue 4gauge for my gound. And it's fairly cheap to buy by the foo and a local stereo shops. And they will have the proper ring terminals you need as well.

For anyone else looking. Welding cable is what ground wires are made out of. If you try and use the large ga wire from a hardware store it is not the correct type. Welding wire has very fine wires that will not break from vibration and movement.
Welding wire is cheap, I relocated a battery to the trunk in a racecar and it cost about $20 for 25ft of welding wire. Just figured that info went along with the thread. |

try and get the copper terminals too on premade cables, not steel that'll rust up
put the batt. terminal coating on them....on the grounds and all, paint over'em to protect them works fine ditto on the battery cables -- the insulation is a higher quality too -- more resistant to oil and grease than the cheap plastic insulation that is on a lot of wiring now. i have a 258 -- the motor ground lasts longer now that i moved it to the distributor side of the motor -- i guess heat from the exhaust manifold and pipe was getting to it. |

Tinned wire
If you use Marine grade wire it is tinned, (a light tin coating on each strand of copper wire) the tinned wire won't corrode like regular copper. so you probably won't ever have to replace it as long as you own the Jeep. It costs a little more but well worth it for the hassle of having to do it again a coulpe of years down the road
just my 2 cents Dave |
