I have a 1979 CJ7 with no title. Is there anyway to get a title if the previous owner won't help at all. I'm assuming it is not stolen as he gave me a bill of sale with valid name and address but he claims he just used it for a hunting camp and never had the title and is not willing to submit any paperwork to get one. Anyone have any ideas on how to get a title from a junk yard or ?
You might be able to get a "reprint" from the DVM if you have a legitimate VIN. Or up here in WI you can just get it inspected (not emission but safety) and get "Hobbyist" plates instead of regular plates. The Hobbyist plate is mainly intended for kit cars that never had a manufacturer title but can also be used in place of lost titles, I believe. Check your states website for info. Wisconsin DMV website, for example, has a pretty thorough explanation of different options.
You may have to buy a junk to get a clean title. Junk yards are required by law to 'turn in' all titles to vehichles they salvage for parts, but no junkman worth his salt turns in a title of a vehichle such as a CJ. When you ask the junkman about a title just make sure that you're talking as though you want to buy enough of the vehichle to make it legal, he'll know that's not the case but better to appease his sensebilities
I would guess a clean title will run $500 at a salvage yard
Perhaps someone on the forum can 'sell' you a hulk for $200 - $250
Lotsa luck
