Need some tips on painting engine block and tranny

Powerwashed and wire brushed my block, tranny and transfercase today and I want to paint everything high gloss black. I was going to use VHT engine paint on all parts, is this a good idea or should I POR 15 it all? Should I spray primer first on everything? Thanks.

I used POR15 on my block.. painted it about 5 years ago and it still looks pretty good.

Key is to really degrease it well. I pressure washed it really good. Then, I got in there with a scrub brush and "Super Clean" and scrubbed the snot out of it.

Shot the POR 15 on bare block.

I used POR on my trans and used high temp engine primer and paint on the engine block. Both look really good. Only time will tell which one will hold up better.

Rustoleum. When it starts looking doggy, blow some more on it....

I did use POR15 on the cast iron engine block, then top coated with the rusty...

Home applied powder coating is the only way to go. Once you do it, you will never use a rattle can again! Only cost about $100.00 for a kit from Eastwood Company, ,http://www.eastwoodco.com/ ,and the results you get are second to none. Apply in any weather, no waiting to dry, ready to install after part is cooled from the oven and a finish that you can beat with a hammer.

I used high temp primer and paint on the block. Scuffed up the trans and used high temp paint. X2 on the cleaning, clean, clean and claen again. You will find grease and gunk everywhere.

Nice work! I had a roomate with that set up and we powdered eveything we could. I have been tempted to find an extra oven and start doing it again, but there is only so much room in my garage. I have a 3car, but for some reason my wife thinks she can park there, and my 19month old thinks her wagon and tri get spots as well....

Fantastic work Keith. You must either have an oven in your garage or you're a single man.

I can only picture my wife coming home as I'm wrangling the well-cooked cylinder head of a 23 year old 258 out of her pristine oven of which we feed from!

I have everything setup in my basement workshop. Found an old oven someone put out on the curb for trash and my place of business gave me their not so old sandblaster which is needed to prep pieces before applying powders. I wouldn't dare bake in the wife's oven but I have on occasion used the toaster oven for small parts. Larger parts, like engine blocks, axles, gas tank and skid plates went to our place of business as we have large rotary ovens that can swallow a small car.

Home applied powder coating is by far the best cheap investment I've done for my current Jeep CJ restoration as I have been able to refurbish 90% of all OEM parts/accessories to look better than new. I've even been experimenting with mixing colors and or applying different powders to achieve a specific look. Now have the Cadmium Plating look just about right with a base coat of powder coat "reflective chrome" followed by "translucent gold".

The only negative thing about powder coating I can think of is you must choose the color you want wisely because, after the powder is cured in the oven, it is nearly impossible to remove. It took me nearly a week to remove, clean and re coat some engine parts that had the wrong gloss of black on them.
