Need Info

I am Jeep stupid. I just bought an '86 and have no idea what I really have. They told me it is a CJ7. Are all jeeps in this year range CJ's (with the exception of Cherokee's etc..)? Mine had a 6 banger in it and I don't even know what size or make of engine it is. Its in really good shape and I only paid 1k for it.
Any help or education would be great.'

Odds are it is a CJ 7 (CJ5's stopped production in 81' or 83'). In 86' the 6 cyl should be the 258 (good torque and run forever IMO). The rear end could be either a Model 20 (round) or Dana 44 (better than the 20). Front will be a Dana 30. Transfer case- Dana 300. $1,000 doesn't sound too bad. Take a close look at the frame, especially near the back from about the door back to the rear spring hanger. They are notorious for rusting through.

Only difference is that the rearend will be an AMC 20 - replace the axles with one piece ones (about $300) and you are good to go...

Couple of things:
1) Where did you get the half doors, and cost for the CJ7?
2) Where did you find the complete roolbar for the CJ7?

Half doors are from a YJ - usually go for $200 - 300.

I made my cage (We actually make quite a few cages) - Check out my CJ7 makeover at the link at the bottom of this post.

Cool One more thing . . .

While you will figure stuff out as you go, oen more thing to consider.

Jeepers are notoriuos for doing alkinds of realy cool modivfications and the occasional crime against humanity.

It may seem stock, but use ID guides, you might have a swapped in chevy 12-bolt rear axle (good), but you might have Ford Pinto parts (unlikey).

Bottom line is all may not be what it seems. Hook up with local jeepers in your area for a once over. Better yet grab a Haynes or Chiltons and get at it.

First of all....you should probably get a magazine....such as JP Magazine. You can pick up a lot of information about things to do to make your jeep more trailworthy...and also it tells about places to go, etc. It's a pretty decent magazine that's dedicated to jeeps.

As far as aftermarket parts....Rosser is a good place with just about any jeep part you can think of.
