Need Help On Issue So I Can Get Home Later....

Ok...So i was driving home on the highway, about 45 mile drive, jeep ran fine, i got off the exit, was waiting at the light, started in first, as i shifted into 2nd i heard a backfire from what sounded like my exaust. After the backfire I had trouble keepin my jeep running, my amps were dropping and it would shut off. It was running really rough when it was still moving, felt like it was gettin limited gas. So i get home and i can barely get it to start.........I have to pump and stay on the gas, so I think its a gas problem, but my carb is gettin gas, the filter is clean, gas is comin through the line before and after the filter...I have no idea what the problem is, and i have to get back down to my place tonight......HELP!

have you looked down the throat of the carb as you open the throttle? You should see a squirt of fuel as you do this. If you don't that either means the float bowl is empty or the accelerater pump is shot. But the concern here is the fuel level in the float bowl.

If it is getting fuel then next thing to check is the timing.

yeah i checked down the carb, fuel is going in as a move the throttle, so fuel is goin all the way from the tank to the carb and squirting in, could it be possible blockage in my exaust? Can my timing go just like that also??

Could be a bad ignition module - autozone and pepboys can test yours.
Your timing chain jumped a tooth and/or as stated above, timing is off.
You have one or more fouled spark plugs or a broken wire.
The distributor cap needs replaced -- check for spark on all wires.

There is a small possibility that your backfire screwed up the converter or the muffler and back pressure is killing the engine.

I just took it down the road, i had to stay on the gas heavy or it would stall out, when i would let off the gas slowly though, i would get a small backfire from teh tail pipe, also when i would have it in neutral not moving, and i would be on the gas the exaust sounded a little deeper with a small hesitation to it. it would also shake more than usual side to side when trying to idle and not moving......any more ideas?? oh i forgot to add, i have a new battery, ignition coil, alternator, and spark plugs...

It sounds as though your timing is off. Make sure your distributor is tight and has not moved.

If the exhaust was clogged you should hear a hiss of the pressure being released thru small holes in the ehaust system.

IIRC, my CJ-5 kinda acted that way when the Duraspark module went. I went through 4 of them over the 25 years or so that I've owned it. Now I run DUI HEI. so far so good.

can you tell by taking the module apart if it has gone, mine looks very clean inside and appears to be in very good shape....

I've never tried to troubleshoot one. My guess is that it's hard to tell visually because it's one of the electrical components that goes. All four times I just went down and bought a new one and stuck it in. Sorry for not being very helpful.

haha no i appreciate the input, i just was wondering cause when i opened mine up it looked brand new, that small little part can really cause that whole bad timing/backfire issue in the middle of driving??

Here's my vote

I'm leaning towards the timing chain jumping a chain.
Mine did exactly the same thing. I managed to nurse it home, running roughly.
Final diagnosis, new timing chain, and a couple of bent pushrods.

I think what happens is the ignition cuts out while you're driving and you try to keep going by pressing on the gas. That just loads the exhaust system up with gas then the ignition cuts back in again and BLAM. The first time it happened to me, there happened to by a guy walking on the side of the road when the Jeep backfired. He must have thought I had taken a shot at him.

Just a thought....Cracked distributor cap. Try a new one with a new rotor. Or the distributor kicked around some, re-set the timing (I think someone said that).
