My new CJ7 project

Just wanted to post some pics. This project started out with random ebay purchase of an 86 cj7 with a rotted body. The frame was almost perfect though and it came with hard doors, soft doors, soft top, extra dash, lift kit. The bad was the body was totally gone and the VINS had been swiped, wheels were toast, windshield trashed, no battery, no carb, no radiator.

Rot was real bad, thought I might get away with a few floor pan patches but there was almost nothing left to this tub

So I began looking for a tub replacement on the cheap. FOund a nice precut fiberglass tub but it ended up being too pricey, then found a rust free YJ tub with heater assembly from a local ebayer for a great price picked it up with a trailer and brought her home.

Sweet deal roll bar included as well

So now I am looking for some VIN tags and a title, a windshield, wheels, battery, air cleaner, fuel pump and I should be ready to go. Found a title and a guy who said he had everything I needed but was trying to track down one of the VIN tags. I kept my eyes open and was searching for wheels when I came upon this beauty (Im sure this was someone one the forums former ride)

So this also had a rotted body and the frame was toasted as well, and the owner knew nothing about cars other than that his project was over. It took a little time educating him about the fact that this jeep was not repairable but finally convinced him this was a parts jeep. I had this towed home another huge score. This is the nasty frame damage, both sides torn from the spring mounts.

Rebuilt engine with holley double barrel, Offenhauser intake, headers, flowmaster exhaust, big lift, 35" BFG Mts in new condition, poly bushings all around, lots of stainless hardware, aftermarket seats, aftermarket steering wheel, sway bar quick disconnects, Dana 44 rear, good windshield, clean title, hard top, new soft top, new soft doors, hard doors, vinyl camo flooring, cb, tuffy center console

Good luck with the new project. You've already made some headway, in that you found a decent tub. Have you tried starting it yet?

So now my garage is getting full 86 cj that I want for the frame only at this point, YJ tub and the 79 CJ7 which I want for axles, suspension, engine and drivetrain and VINS.

I started tearing down the blue 86 to get things going, actually I tore this down a few hours after getting it home, the plasma cutter really moves things along quickly

No engine hoist no problem when you have steel I beam ceilings and 2 ton clamps

Started prepping the frame and found one minor issue

This is not really a stress point rot out more just straight rust, and plenty of good metal around it to weld to so I went to patching it with 1/8 plate and 1/4 angle iron on the bottom rail.

not the prettiest patch but if the frame fails it will not be here.

After the first coat of POR-15

by the way heed the warning on the label don't get this stuff on your skin, a week later after acetone, orange pumice, soaking for hours this stuff is still hanging onto my hands.

A few body mounts need to be reinforced so the plasma cutter, die grinder and angle grinder make quick work of it

So now I am getting ready for the heart transplant, so moved things around a bit to facilitate this since I don't have a mobile hoist or engine stand. I put the prepped frame head to head under one of the Ibeams with the engine donor and will be able to hoist the engine up, roll the donor back and drop the engine into the new frame. Should make it easier for me since I am doing this solo with no helping hands.

Now I am in the process of stripping down the Yellow engine donor since I want to utilize the new gas lines and gas tank. Hoping by the end of the week to get the engine pulled and installed.

Wanted to post but now this is cutting out of my progress time! Away for work next week so I need to make some progress this week so I can make some space in the garage.
