I have just wheeled in CA, Fordyce, Rubicon being the toughest that I have had experience with. I would be up for a trip to Moab when time permits...which probably means kids need to be a touch older...but, you never know, and, I have time on my side because if we were to meet you and Jim at Moab, Jim needs to finish his Jeep first!! Easter Safari has always been in the back of my mind...

Of course Bill, you are definitely invited!!! I told Scott a long time ago we all needed to go to Moab! I think he was the only nay sayer... I don't know if we will ever get him out of Florida!!!

I gave a dana 35 to a guy last week, he has been to both, he told me Moab is adult Disneyland! Trails ranging from mild to holy crap! He rented a JKR for his mom, it seems she used to race jeeps back in the day, and he said she had a blast on the mild trails.

I still haven't done the entire rubicon trail, and would love to do that some time!!! But I enjoy the trip that Mike puts together through the Tahoe side of the trail!!!!

Finally had a chance to take apart the remnants of the busted lockout on the driver's side.

here are the pieces as they came off:

and here are the inners still on the stub axle:

interestingly enough, the cast aluminum outer housing is what failed. The inner parts all seem to be OK. My question to you all is this:

Can I just rebuild the lockout if I found a used outer housing with the remaining parts I have?

or should I buy a new set of lockouts, either Warns or Mile Markers, rebuild this one and use it and the passenger side as spares?

I was seriously considering upgrading to the 6 bolt hub/lockout but I am now convinced I like this set up better as this is a much easier trail fix when this fuse (lockout) blows then a u-joint, axle, pinion gears etc...

Chime in gurus, chime in...

This^^^

The first time I went to Moab I used a Dana 30 with 6 bolt lockouts. Warn axle shafts with 4.27 gears and 36" IROCS, a lockrite, and a beafed up factory driveshaft.

The easiest part to replace, should be the weak point. That part is the lockout.

Bill

Use a housing and rebuild it. You have the technology. You can make it better!

Isn't moab out in a desert setting with mostly some rocks to climb around on; whereas the rubicon is more of a mountainous trail ride with a mixture of obstacles. Am I wrong on that?

The Rubicon trail consists of some forest service roads with the tough parts traversing granite, huge boulders, rock gardens etc in a beautiful setting. You can camp in the Rubicon springs and swim in crystal clear water pooled up in granite bowls. I have not completed the entire trail but look forward to the day when I do. I take my kids down each summer with a few other families for a very long picnic/Jeep ride. we typically take 3 hours or so to traverse just 2-3 miles. and, if it rains, it can take longer. I have only seen pictures and video of Moab and one day I will get there...

Sure they are oem? Hard to tell from the picture but they look to be a little wider with an offset. Are the edges of the cut outs flat or beveled?
