sometimes you get lucky! I replaced the fuel filter and the CJ started right up. It turns out I had a cracked line from the tank going INTO the filter and I would bet that I was sucking dust, dirt and who knows what into filter? I cut into the filter just to see and, as the picture shows, there was caked on gunk at the end of the filter, unless that black "gunk" is supposed to be the latest and greatest filtering media from WIX (they manufacture Napa Gold filters)! Please chime away if you think different.
Also, the cracked line was 5/16" and the filter calls for 3/8" line going into it from tank and 5/16" coming out going towards fuel pump. I swapped in some high pressure 3/8" line I had in my pile of parts. I couldn't find a reason not to so if you know better, please holler...
EDIT: I am now thinking the "gunk" in the picture is some kind of adhesive (RTV type) to hold the filter cartridge to the cannister. No?
