side tracked! a close friend asked me to help him find a CJ and we finally found one...he came home with an '86 CJ7, 94k original miles bought from the original owner who was a superb guy. He had all the paperwork including the original sticker, factory service manual and receipts. The Jeep is stock except for 31" tires and a full roll cage. There is minor service rust with assorted small dings in the body. 258, T5, Dana 300, Dana 44 rear with limited slip, Dana 30 front with 3.31 gears. Original everything means some parts will be replaced and upgraded like the suspension, fuel injection and cosmetic items my pal wants to add but I am excited for him and me as I will be doing as much of the work as time and skill permit...he paid a very fair price and I can't complain about this Previous Owner, he was great to talk to.

I wrote up a list of parts that need to be replaced/upgraded and sent it to my pal last night. He has sticker shock. Since the Jeep runs very good now, I think he is going to drive it for awhile before fuel injection. But, MOPAR fuel injection kit by Hesco is what we will install. I have it in my Jeep and it has been flawless.

First attention goes to the suspension since the springs are original. I am recommending the BDS 2.5" lift with the conversion to the YJ springs. I do want to check out one more time the Rubicon Express choices in that size lift but I don't believe they are making them anymore, just the 4" which is too much for this Jeeps intended purpose.

I have not ruled OME out yet...you still like your lift, correct?

Yeah, love it. It rides fantastic...for a leaf sprung Jeep anyway...even my wife said it rides good...

My muffler is rotting through again, this time after only 2 years. Time to revisit the exhaust system. I am looking for a quiet muffler like the factory but better quality. The current muffler is 3.75"x8"x13" and I need to stay as close to that as possible. I am looking at some of the Flowmasters that are a tad larger and hoping they fit. Suggestions? Tell me what has worked for you.

Check out Flo Pro Performance Exhaust.

A little pricey, but their mufflers are constructed with much heavier gauge steel than Flowmasters. You might get a few more years out of one.

I am getting closer to my muffler solution. I have ruled out the aftermarket performance type mufflers such as Flowmaster, Magnaflow, Dynamax etc as I just want the factory quietness and am much too worried about extra noise. Now, the next question to answer is to find a decent muffler that ain't made overseas and built with quality in mind. I have stumbled across IMCO Exhaust, home of the Cherry Bomb and Maremont mufflers that are built right here in the good 'ole U.S. of A. So, much like my friend Jim Crabtree always emphasizes (as well as many of us), buying U.S made products is a great thing. These happen to be made in TN and TX. So, it looks like I am headed in that direction but for the meantime, I fixed the hairline cracks around the neck of the muffler (pictured in post #146) using J.B. Weld. I love that stuff and that should hold until I can get things ordered up.

If anyone has an IMCO muffler and have comments about it, good, bad or indifferent, I'd love to hear from you...
