MSD ignition coil

1979 CJ5, 258, 2bbl

I have done the TeamRush upgrade, and I just bought an MSD Blaster 2F coil, part number 8205. I was reading the directions, and it says that I need a 0.8 ohm ballast resistor or resistor wiring when installing on a Factory Ford ignition system. I don't recall reading anything about that in any of the posts about the upgrade.

First, what the heck is a ballast resistor

Second, if I need it, how do I go about installing it? The instructions don't tell me how to do it.

The instructions on Summit's web site only say you need it if you are installing a MSD coil on a points system, do I have points?

Thanks.

No, your not on a points style ignition. The Blaster 2f was a direct plug in for my upgrade on my 258, but I do think I had a small ballast on my connector. I just disconnected the old one and hooked up the new.

If it helps any, my stock coil says "for breakerless ignition with external resistor"

OK, yours has a lot more wires than mine, and I don't have those things. Too bad summit won't take this thing back now that I've opened it. More complicated than my brain can understand.

What is the second red wire going into the left side of yours? I had 1 wire on the left, and 2 green ones on the tach side. Is the other red wire part of the ballaster? The picture of the one MSD sells looks nothing like that.

Let me see if I can get a better shot of the coil once I get off of work. I thought I had read somewhere that the ballast is basically there to keep the ignition noise out of your radio.... There was a thread I started on the TeamRush install that JeepHammer had some good information in. It was his recommendation on the 2F coil for easy plug and play.

First, what the heck is a ballast resistor
"Ballast Resistor" is code for "We are still quoting Model 'T' repair manuals".
True "Ballast" resistors haven't been used since Marconi radios were being used...

What they are talking about for your ignition is a simple inline resistor, and 0.8 Ohm is the minimum you need to keep the coil from smoking it's self if you leave the key turned to 'RUN' without the engine running...

If you still have the '79 factory wiring harness, you already have a 1.35 Ohm resistor wire in the harness.
The factory coil/module used a 1.35 Ohm resistor to keep the module alive, and it will work fine for your Blaster 2F.

NOPE, no points,
And Summit is wrong, you DO need a coil supply resistor if you are running the stock DuraSpark module along with if you are running points (which you are not),
Can't do the TeamRush upgrade on a breaker point distributor in an AMC engine...

Just plug the coil in and you will be fine.

Nope, that round thing in the picture is a Capacitor.
Old timers called it a 'Condenser'.

In points ignitions, it's often located in the distributor next to the points.
It's function there is to absorb some electrons so the breaker points can open cleanly and not arc across the gap.

In modern ignitions, it's often located at the coil, and it's there to 'Buffer' the current fluctuations as the coil is switched 'ON' & 'OFF' for each firing cycle...
It's there to help remove coil switching 'noise' from the electrical system...
Most commonly heard in the radio when you have the radio turned up between stations and when you have a tape or CD in and you will heat the switching noise in between songs.

If you hear the ignition in the radio only, but not when the tape or CD is on, then that's not switch noise, it's RFI, or Radio Frequency Interference.
You probably have a bad plug wire, distributor cap terminal, something like that...

Thanks JH. Was hoping you would chime in here and sort this out. So Ivaskja can just plug in the Blaster 2F right?

Well, that's good. Now if only I could track down the wire connector that I need to attach the red wire to the coil. It was hanging on by a thread, and when I pulled the plastic connector thing off the top of the coil, it broke off. I can't find one big enough to go over. I guess I'm going to have to hit up the boneyards tomorrow. As usual, a 2 hour job turns into a 2 or 3 day job.

Yes, that would be exactly what I need. I wonder why the dolt at NAPA couldn't find that when I went there. And all the other auto parts stores.

What's the difference between the Blaster 2 and Blaster 3 other than the center post on the 2 being the older female type and on the 3 it has the spark plug tip?

I just came back from Napa and got the the cap, rotor and adapter for the Team Rush upgrade, but I didn't find any wires. However, I did notice they had a Blaster 2 and Blaster 3, side by side. Almost bought the 3, but then got scared, thinkin I might be buying the wrong thing.

From what I found online, the 2 has a resistor built in, while the 3 doesn't.

http://www.inlinefour.com/msdblas3coil.html

They use the term "ballast resistor", so I don't know how accurate that info is.

Now that I've got this MSD coil, should I increase my spark plug gap? I've got them set at .035" now, can I go out to .040 or .045? Thanks.
