Depends on what install you are doing....
Your '86 already has ONE reistor in place in the wiring harness, You DO NOT need another one if you haven't cut the wiring up. The easy way to test is... Take a test light, Connect it to the battery POSITIVE, Probe the battery NEGATIVE terminal and see what a 'Bright' light looks like. Then disconnect the coil connector currently on the coil. Turn the ignition switch to the 'Run' position, Probe the 'RED' wire, look for a 'DIM' light. If you get a dimmer light than you got testing on the battery, the resistor is already in place and you don't need another one. ......................................... The recommended resistor is for systems that DO NOT have a resistor already in place. From '78 to '86 (and beyond) there was a resistor wire in place in the factory harness, and it's plenty for the coil I recommended, No extras or replacements needed.

JH, I have a question about the resistor. I'm doing the teamrush on my 77 using majority MSD parts, including the coil mentioned above, just waiting for the parts to come in and start. Since I'll be using the resistor, is the diode that you recommended me to wire to my alternator still necessary?

Quote:
'77 had a Prestolite module, and you CAN NOT use the Prestolite module with the Jeep/Motorcraft distributor... *IF* you are using the GM HEI module, you DO NOT need an IGNITION RESISTOR of any kind. (No matter which coil you choose) *IF* you are using a CDI module, you DO NOT need an IGNITION RESISTOR of any kind. (No matter which coil you choose) *IF* you are using a Ford DuraSpark module (Jeep/DuraSpark) Then you MUST use an Ignition Resistor to keep the cheap aftermarket 'Discount' modules alive. At least 1.35 Ohms, and 1.5 Ohms would be better if you are using an E-core coil. .................................................. .............. As for the DIODE... The ONLY REASON you need a Diode in the alternator wiring is if your vehicle 'Runs On' after you turn the key switch off... You *PROBABLY* will need a Diode if you are using a Ford/DuraSpark module, GM HEI style module, or an aftermarket CDI module. BUT! It will depend on which alternator you have now and *IF* it's got a stiff 'Brown' wire going to the #1 or 'R' terminal on the two wire plug... If it is NOT a Delco Remy SI Series alternator, then you might not need a Diode...

I'm using the Motorcraft distributor instead of a stock prestolite. I do have the OEM alternator, and using the MSD 6a, Blaster 2 coil, and the required parts for the teamrush. My current dizzy is also a CRT HEI, so I don't have a module anymore, PO removed them.

Hammer, if you lengthen the RED wire white stripe going to the coil will that change resistance or it doesn't matter after the crimp/connection in the wire loom toward the coil. I can just reach my coil but I would like to lengthen it to re-route it.
Thanks,

No change with regular wire, you can run a few feet of it extra if needed.

Thanks Mike, I do have a old harness I am using for things like this and I found the red wire w/the white stripe, I cut a piece of that & use it.
Thanks again, Jim
