motor and tranny

O.K. I ask what motor and tranny to run in an 83 CJ-7. I got alot of ideas from you. I found a 305 a friend is willing to give me if I pull it. The motor is about 7 years old with less than 10,000 miles since it was put in the truck(transmission went out). Friend says it was a crate engine and has paperwork. He is going to a big block and wants it out of his way. I now need a carb. I have had several people tell me to run a Holley Truck Avenger. Anybody have any experience with them?

The Holley Truck Avenger is a decent carb. I have one on the wife's AMC 360. Loaned it to a buddy for a couple of trail rides. It handled steep inclines/off camber stuff better than the Edelbrock he was running but if you get on really steep stuff, it'll still load up. For a moderate trail rig I would say it's perfect. If you're into rock crawling and the vehicle sees enough angle to "teeter", then you'll have to work the throttle to keep it running.

What year is the 305? Look for a TBI for it.

It's out of a 84 pick-up. What's a tbi set up run? Is it about the same as the carb?

It's Throttle Body Injection (Fuel Injection) came on the V8s from what... 87 on? It's a smooth running system that's fairly easy to do. Best bet is to rip an entire system off of a junkyard vehicle.. throttle body, intake, wiring harness, sensors and computer.

I wasn't real clear on the last post. What I meant by what does it run I meant price. Is it about the same price as the carb in question or more expensive?

A carb is likely cheaper, but you might be able to get the full TBI system from a junkyard for a good price. Plus add in the fuel ecomony you can save and convenience of not needing to warm the engine up and the hassle of a carb, and I'd say it's worth whatever extra cost it comes to be.
