motor swap in 81 CJ5 can't decide what motor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

so for the last month I've been trying to figure out my plan for my cj5 i now know i want to run 36's with a 4" suspension lift and 1"body lift and shackles if there needed but now on to the hard part i have the tinny gm 151 4cyl and the garbage SR4 tranny and the dana 300 TC. i was planning on switching to automatic and swapping a 350 V8 but now the more i read everyone says a automatic in a cj5 with a lift is not going to work.. i am planning on using this jeep to go mudding and then drive on the road maybe to the beach or just for a cruise every so often so need help. i was also looking into maybe a 4.3l v6 and converting it to carbonated but don't know if that will work either so now I'm stuck and need some help..... what motor would be a good choice for me and who has done a swap that would work for me.... thanks in advanced

SBC 350, or AMC 360, T-176, and your Dana 300.

That would be the most bang for your buck and also the easiest.

so automatic is pretty much out of the picture? and if i did a amc360 would i still need different motor mounts?

Yes, and Yes... autos have a longer length, making drive shaft length an issue...

yeah I dont think the 4cyl motor mounts would work... but you can keep the bellhousing and use it with the T176 I believe by re-tapping.

People have done an Automatic before in CJ5's but I wouldnt want to drive one at any kind of speed...

no the bellhousing is a gm bellhousing i don't think it will work.

Pricing, no clue. But if you are going to go thru the effort to go to a V8, might as well skip that step of the small V8 and go larger

I'd look for a 304 or 360. Either one is plenty in a 5. The 360 is more common around here, though. I guess my point is if I found a 304 that seemed solid and a fair price, I'd jump on it.

a SBC will cost less to install than a AMC but both are great choices.

i just dropped in an amc 360 with an NP 435, d300. i got more mounts and driveshafts from a stock cj with a t5 in it and that was all it took. its a very very simple straight forward swap and it yields GREAT results

and as for where to get one? craigslist my friend. i happen to have a spare t176 but im all the way in va.
