I am not a fan of the open element under the hood. Prefer the stock look and cooler air from the grill. Has a brake booster. The OEM offset air cleaner has a small opening (for the original Carter BBD). Anyone modify that? I'm looking for an OEM looking offset with a large opening for the TBI. Not looking for the common Howell aluminum style with cone filter as seen below. Rather the OEM look somehow modified for TBI (Keith's photo).
The picture of Keith's rig shows an adapter between a Weber carb and the factory air cleaner. You could probably fab a similar adapter for your TBI. You'd also have to modify the support bracket on the valve cover, but that would be easy enough.
I used a TJ stock air intake on my 4.0 swap. It places the filter box on the passenger side where there is room even with AC compressor. It's not CJ stock but it is Jeep stock
That part is occasionally offered on EBay. You may be able to get one with a CJ power brake style air cleaner assembly. You may need to ask about the part when purchasing the assembly. The part when available "stand alone" often costs as much as an entire air cleaner assembly.
Here's what I did. I made a simple bracket to move the air cleaner over and used a silicone coupler from a cold air intake kit. I can get more detailed pictures tomorrow if you want.

OP, I would be all over the setup that lugnut28 has. A silicone adapter from the plumbing department at the hardware store is a great adapter from one size to another. :smile2:
Great ideas! Lugnut, could you please post more photos of the great TBI adapter and your fabricated valve cover bracket for the offset power brake style air cleaner? My plan is to add the OEM power brake booster. Do you have enough room between the TBI throttle linkage and OEM booster/MC?
In addition to the great silicone adapter/reducer idea, the valve cover bracket could easily be fabricated from a piece of sheet metal and few common hardware store parts.
Great silicone adapter/reducer idea, just not sure about finding one with that kind of reduction - 5.125 inch (TBI side) to 2.625 (air cleaner to OEM Carter) side.
Did you check out the various 2-barrel to 4-barrel air cleaner adapters that are available? Google it, there are several different designs that should get you there.
Thanks for the excellent advice. Below are 2 options I'll try. One is a cheap Mr Gasket 4 bbl to 2 bbl adapter, the other a pricey aluminum propane part. I'll report back with results. Still like to see Lugnut's custom made valve cover bracket for the air cleaner.
While I am sourcing parts to do a clean factory look (new air cleaner and mount) I still wanted to retain the use of my vehicle. I ended up picking up the mr gasket adapaters pictured above from oreillys. They will work just fine. I have a round 10inch edelbrock breather on it right now. It's open air, so until I get my OEM setup going, I'm not going near dirt roads.
Couldn't do to much about the Air Cleaner Housing mount adapter on top of the valve cover but the TB adapter ring and plastic washer looks like something one can 3D print
While reading this thread I saw a pic of a valve cover that got my attention. So Good Morning to all and can someone help me identify the openings on my valve cover.
Obviously the oil fill cap, the PCV and its the one on the back end that confuses me. It is just a 60º elbow that goes to what appears to be a jury rigged hose into the breather.
Also, the PCV has two lines coming off of it. One transitions to copper tubbing, and then goes down into the manifold beneath the carburetor. The other hose is all rubber and goes to a vacuum port on the very OUTSIDE of the manifold.
The pic I'm referring to in this thread looks to have a "oil type cap" in the very back. Here is a pic of my valve cover. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Trying to maintain a "stock look" with the large 5.125 inch GM TBI opening, along with adding an OEM style power brake booster, is proving to be a little more of a challenge. I'll report back after adapters arrive.
Also do not forget about all the different types and sizes of adapter that a wood shop dust collection system use's some rubber and some are a harder plastic
I don't think the above coupler will work for the OP. He's going from 5-1/8" to 2-5/8"
Matt
