Max tire size on factory tire carrier

Hey guys,

What is the maximum tire size that will fit on a CJ7 factory tire carrier? I recently bought an 86 CJ7 with 33s and want to put a spare on the back. Possibly may even upgrade to 35s in the near future. Can you fit this large of a tire on the factory tire carrier?

you can, but it will take it's toll after some time and bumps. some (myself included) have had some problems with the carrier itself. mine has cracked where the rim itself meets the carrier. and some have had their carrier rip right out of the tub. best bet is to bite the bullet and order a new bumper and tire carrier from besrk!

DT's right on the money- 33's will fit, and they will eventually cause it to crack and or fail.

I ran a 32x11.5 (with 8.5" wide rim) spare on my '83 with some adjustments to the bumpstops, and had to repair (weld) the frame.

I have a 33 on mine and have not had a problem for 2 years. But I had to take off the bumper that hits the tire
on the bottom because it rubbed a hole in the sidewall. I need to add that I don't drive my CJ much except to go on trail rides with my Jeep club about 10 times a year.

My Tire Carrier gave out and took some of the tub with it with 33x12.50's....Get a better tire carrier...I'm in the process of ordering one from BERSK...its a better deal than the Warn ones and looks better too IMO!

Here's a little trick I came up that adds support to my 33" spare and also makes good use of that "useless" trailer hitch (although BESRK's are still the best way).

I currently have a 32" on mine, but it also has a lot of the weight supported by my rear hitch receiver:

When I go with a larger tire, I plan on rear corner armor + a beefier body-mounted tire carrier.

I used thick polished diamond plate to sandwich the tailgate area, used grade 8 hardware, bolts washers and lock nuts and used the stock carrier. I have a 33x14.50x15 Super Swamper TSL back there.
No issues, but again I did add extra support with the diamond plate.

I've had 33x12.50 tires on the factory tire carrier for years and the only problem I had is the driver's side latching bracket started to crack the tub sheet metal from the weight of the tire. I have fixed this on the new tub by adding an additional support bracket like they have on the upper hinge side of tub. The new bracket will support the added weight of the tire as it will be tied into the the rear wheel house with a backing plate like the passenger side is.

I really like that. Simple and effective. Now I'm inspired to go see how high above my receiver the bottom of my tire is. If I did not get lucky so that my tire hits exactly like yours did I can use a bolt and weld a flat tire bump to the bolt so that I can adjust the bump by moving a couple of nuts up or down the bolt.

X2 on BERSKS. On my first jeep the original was ripping thru the tub with 31's. Now that I've got my second Jeep (Original) I'll be ordering one of his bumpers with the oversized tire carrier and going with 32 or 33's.
