Max tire size

My 78 CJ7 has a 2-1/2 suspension lift that the PO installed. I have 31" tires now that are getting pretty worn. I would like to go up to 32" but some of the charts I've been looking at say that 31 is the max tire for a 2-1/2 lift. I did a brief search on lifts but didn't find anything. Anyone have an accurate chart on tire size/lift size?

4wd.com has some charts to use, but from an experience perspective it will depend on your lift (manufacturer). I ran a 2 1/2" RE lift with a 1" body lift and cleared 33" tires. If it were me I'd buy the 32" and keep a 1" body lift as an option if you find clearance problems.Hope that helps.

throw a set of tube fenders cut back at cab side and rock 35s. clearance the back corners of bottom rears. next worry axles. stay in 31-33 with stock axles!

Don't know if this will help you but my $.02 would be to try and find someone you know who has that size tire to try and throw on there. When I got new tires thats what I did because on a 30+ year old car there is just no chart for everything. One person will tell you one thing and another person will tell you something else. For me the problem wasn't fenders it was the front tires being close to the leaves in a tight turn.

Borrowing a tire and wheel will only tell you what the clearence will be for that wheel. Measure the backspacing so you can compare it to what wheel you intend to use!!!

My '79 CJ5 has a 2 1/2" Rancho lift. I am running 33 x 12.50 Mickey Thompsons with no problems. Never had them to rub. 4wd.com says 32" tires are max on a 2 1/2" lift. They may rub on some hard core wheeling, but there is plenty of room for 33s. I actually ran 32s on it stock. Bad thing with a Jeep, just because they fit good on mine, doesn't mean they will fit good on another Jeep.

2.5" BDS, 1" Body, 3/4" shackle, No flares, scout axles, stock wheels:
35's (no they aren't rubbing, but yes it's close):

33's, stock axles, same lift:

33's fit great, the 35's wouldn't work with the stock axles, just too close to the body.
