Matkins Level 2 and Recovery Hooks

I have a Matkins Level 2 CJ frame...and the frame doubles as the front bumper. There are holes for the d-hooks...but they look pretty dang small as compared to the size of hooks I've seen on other vehicles.

I understand that the diameter of the hooks at the pin is thinner..but I can't see a pin that small being strong enough for safe recovery.

Does anyone have any experience with this/suggestions?

There seems to be plenty of material to drill a bigger hole 'if needed' without changing the integrity of the tabs...

Anyone?!
