manual locking hubs
Would it hurt anything if I just kept my hubs locked in all the time? So when I go off road all I have to do is put it in 4 wheel drive and go.

A little extra drag on the tires, less MPG, more wear and tear on the moving components like axle joints. Lots of rigs are full time without the option of locking hubs and it never made much difference. Up to you. IMO, I will leave them unlocked until needed.

No don't do that, you'll just wear everything out a lot faster. Unless you only drive in a straight line all day, then you'll just get worse gas mileage.

Driving with the hubs locked will not damage anything. However if you are going to run it that way for extended periods, then you need to inspect and lube the spindle bearings(an importiant part of front end maintenence that is almost never checked anyway).

Doesn't that keep your front drive shaft spinning all the time too? That can lead to more problems. Its a jeep, you are going to have enough problems as it is. Unlock them and lock them when you wheel, your just asking for trouble.

If you don't get off road a lot it is actually good to lock the hubs from time to time and let thing move and lube. This is typically why the front drive shaft slider wears out quicker than the rear (it wears in one spot). That being said, I wouldn't do it all the time. The mileage and wear and tear wouldn't be worth it. The inner spindle bearings are needle bearings that don't hold a lot of grease.

If everybody will look at the question, they will see that 78 cj5 is asking about damage, not a personal opinion on his lazyness. Early CJ's routinely came from the factory with axle drive flanges(a solid block locking the axle to the hub). Every Ford,Chevy and most Dodges running NP203 transfercases in the 70's ran drive axle flanges. Every Jeep with Q track ran drive axle flanges. Will there be wear if you leave the hubs engaged? Yes. Will it be excessive? no. Gosupes pretty well summed it up. Many people in low traction winter regions leave them locked until the snow and ice leaves. |

It pisses me off that some people are calling me lazy. Im not a lazy fat @$$ like some people. Anyways my hubs dont lock in verry good sometimes and I was just wondering if it would hurt anything to keep them locked in since some 4 wheel drives are locked in up front all the time. Thanks to the people that gave me the info I was looking for.

jeepdaddy2000 is correct. You can leave them locked all winter or forever if you want. I was just saying the why cause wear something your not using when you have a choice and the ability to turn it off and save a little life.
