Fastenal p/n 0715663 For a Cleaner Install, You can also order 90° Termianls, to the LEFT or RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, And if you are going to connect the grounds together, I suggest a 'FLAG' connector, AND, For those of you doing 'Add Ons' like stereos, Communications Radios, Inverters, Welding From Your Batteries, I suggest something like this for connections for all that stuff... Heavy 'Eye' or 'Ring' terminals are pretty hard to find sometimes... Here are the ones that are heavy enough for ANYTHING you might want to do, And REMEMBER, these are STACKABLE, you can connect two or three to the same terminal, if the bolt holding them together is long enough! .............................................. Plain old tubing 'Ring' or 'Eye' terminals, Now remember, anyone with copper tubing can make a connector like this at home for cheap!... BUT, If you are buying them, the size of the eye hole is an issue! 5/16" (shown) is the most common electrical connector size on your vehicle... The starter relay, starter, ect. will all accept the 5/16" hole connector shown. ---------------------------------- SOLDER! Sliver Bearing, Rosin Core, intended for ELECTRICAL WORK, Not that old, cheap plumbing solder! The best I've used that is commonly available is from Radio Shack, p/n 64-013. You may have to double it up three or four times to make it easy for the big cables, but the fine strand solder is PERFECT for smaller terminals when you are chasing the 'Electrical Bugs' out of your 'Heep'! http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062717 ![]()

I like this thread, thanks. I tried today to find someone to make some cables for me and not many do this anymore! The local parts stores (even the good ones!) don't do it any more, nor do the NAPA stores in the area. The West Marine told me I could make them at their store but that they could not. I'll go check them out and see what type of stuff they have.

Terminal Hammer Crimper..
Last year I added Solar Panels to my Toy Hauler... I used a bunch of welding lead in the wiring of 4- 6 volts batteries... These hammer crimpers work great if you have a normal hydraulic press... You get a smooth very professional crimp.. If you don't have a press, you can use a good vise.. I build all my battery cables now.... Here is a shot of some of the crimps...

West Marine is way too expensive!!!
OK, I have a press so I might get one of the hammer crimpers and go after it. I did find alot of variance on cable - Airgas has a 4 welding wire 25' for 23$ or so. Would this be ok?

When doing a long hard haul like pulling a dead truck hulk out of a ravine to the trail on an area clean up, I managed to get the ends of my winch cable hot enough to blow the heat shrink off them. This would have melted solder I bet, it was just smoking hot.

Jeep Hammer
First let me say I like your write ups, very easy to follow. When I first bought my jeep, I did not want a "normal" battery cable as they corrode way to easy and the cables are not protected. What I did was buy a set of cables with factory crimp eyelets on both sides then purchased marine terminals with a wing nut connection. Would you see anything negative about this set up? Thanks http://s613.photobucket.com/albums/tt215/ibgrumpy_renegade/Original%20Jeep%20Photos/?action=view¤t=DSC_0007.jpg |

So a part number would be counter-productive since I don't know what size cables you all are going to use... Remember, Two wires will fit in one terminal just as easy as one if you want to power more than one accessory!

so I guess that is good! I would also be interested in the fastenal numbers for the terminals someone posted above - I looked through their catalog for a while and couldn't find them!

More connections means more connection resistance, but adding ONE extra connection to the circuit shouldn't hurt much...

Any part number would be helpful so I could find the others. Do you mean that I could buy a terminal for 1 guage (or larger) and then put in 2 4 guage wires? (one to starter, one to alternator) or something?

I'd probably be going with 1ga welding cable most likely since we have a spool of it readily available at work and they could care less if I took a few feet off it. Its been a while since i set foot in fastenal but most of this stuff should be in the same general area I would imagine...
