I remember the post your're talking about, but don't know where it is. I think it was a link to a website that had the switch install detailed. Try Google?

Be careful.... We use mag switches at work..... Two problems with them...First they don't pass much current, so you must use a relay if it draws lots of amps..... Second they have a high failure rate in weather.... Too hot or too cold.... Here in St PETE we throw them away all the time from getting cooked in the summer.... What part of "WEST FLA" you in? there are better ways of hiding a kill switch.

Magnetic Switch

New Port Richey.. live.. Work Clearwater... it was a switch that they indicated could be purchased from Radio Shack and even gave a number I think, there was a modification for mounting but you used 1 wire to coil or something, which pretty much worked like a toggle switch only used a magnet to activate the connection. concept seems good.. was thinking of using a window alarm magnet switch but not sure if it will handle the load..

No it will not handle the load.... you will need a relay. I work in Pinellas park, just off 62nd. Between 34 and 49th. if you need help let me know.... I work on 4WD Trucks everyday just about A bit higher end then our stuff, but same idea. I have a few spare Hella (or something) relays sitting around I could give you.

Depends on the switch you use.

Magnetic pull switches, like used in burglar alarm on doors and sometimes windows,
Aren't intended for use in moving vehicles.
They are NOT sealed, and I'm not sure I would use one in my vehicle.

On the other hand, if you use a relay, you can use a REED switch to pretty good effect.

I SCUBA, and our scuba equipment often has reed switches because they are completely sealed up, so the salt water can't get into the.

Bring a magnet close, and they close, take the magnet away, and they open.
Operating like that, they can be molded right into the plastic housings and never see salt water or corrosive atmosphere.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reed_switch

I use them on farm gates to notify me if anyone opens the gates in lower pastures.
One mounted in something non magnetic (Aluminum or Plastic) would activate when a magnet was drawn near them and allow the vehicle to start,
(Work like a neutral safety switch)

Remove the magnet, and the vehicle wouldn't start, or if you put it in the correct place, wouldn't run.

SOME WARNINGS!
YOU NEED A VERY STRONG MAGNET!

I did this for an anti-theft device after a company camaro was stolen at Atlanta.
Losses were about $85,000 so the boss said come up with something car thieves couldn't outsmart...

I mounted the switch behind an aluminum panel, used two metal flat faced rivets so the magnet could stick on it.
We build performance cars, so every time the car hit a hard bump, or cornered real hard, the magnet would come loose and the car would die.

Keep the magnet with your key chain!
Lost magnets had me scurrying around several different times looking for replacment magnets because the guys would loose the magnets!

On a 68 camaro we put a simple push on / push off button behind a cigarette lighter mounted in the dash.

Push it in and start the car. push it again and the coil grounds and car no start....

Tear an old Computer hard Drive apart and use the magnets out of it, they are extremely strong.

I was thinking on making a magnetic safety for my CJ7 and was figuring on the reed type of switch and a relay.

I figured if I used the relay to power the ignition coil and picked up the signal (cut the wire) about 8" from the coil itself inside the harness, I could latch it so the magnet only needed to be on for the first of the start, once it was going no need for the magnet.

The magnetic switch would trigger the relay on pin 85 with pin 86 grounded, then the power would pass via pins 30 and 87 to the ignition coil and at the same time a loop of wire comes from pin 87 back to pin 85 with a diode in it so it only allows power one way holding the power to the trigger until the key switch got shut off.

This way as long as the key switch was on, the coil would continue to run so there is no worry of the magnet falling off when you off road.

Mike,
Why dont you use the signal wire to the solenoid for this. What I did was install a 20 amp SPST switch inline of the solenoid signal wire. If it is off, you cannot start the engine. If it is running, you can then cut the wire and it will still run.

I am sure you could install the reed switch in line with this. Just some food for thought.

That would be even simpler, but a no start where nothing happens almost implies hidden switch where as the no coil power will let it crank, just not go so it more implies a dead Jeep or out of gas.

Actually, it's pretty easy to 'Hot Wire' these old ignitions.
A single wire from the solenoid to the module 'Red' wire will make them run no matter what you do to any of the power feed wires.

Grounding the coil is hard on the coil.

Install your switch in the distributor 'Stator' or 'Mag Trigger' wires and it's virtually impossible to find,
The switch handles virtually no current so it lasts forever-- No relay required,
And a 'Hot Wire' won't do squat for making off with the vehicle.

Do what you all want to, I'm just throwing ideas that have worked for us in the past.
