Lord I was born a Scramblin' Maaaan!

Apologies to the Allman Brothers Band for murdering their song title.

I've been looking to add a Scrambler to the herd for a looong time. It seemed everything was either a rust bucket or a complete resto (mega bucks). I simply wanted something that wasn't perfect, but straight and fairly rust free. Well, I found this one up in Connecticut, and had to have it. From what I understand, it lived most of it's life in the Southwest, then was purchased by a guy in Virginia, before landing in CT where the PO purchased it for his daughter 2 yrs ago. After some discussions, we landed on a price and it showed up at my door today.

Its a 1982 w/ the 4.2L and 5 speed (assuming T-5 and Dana 300, but frankly didn't have a chance to crawl up under there and take a hard look). Only rust was a small bit on the rocker right behind the driver door. Underside has surface rust but that's about. The bed was in killer shape, which really sold me.

I'm getting tags for it tomorrow. Only downside is the RMS is leaking like a stuck pig, so I'll be laying on my back getting greasy and nasty this weekend. Quick question (since my RMS experience has been on 360's, 304's and the 258 in my Wrangler): Is the CJ 258 pan removal as straightforward as others? I seem to recall nightmare stories of people having to loosen motor mounts, etc. to get at it. Is this true?

As this post is worthless without pics, here you go!

I couldn't get my kids (and their friends) out of the blasted thing. They assaulted it the second it arrived. But this just made it that much more worthwhile!

That's a great looking truck! I think it's possible to change the rms without messing with the mounts though I had someone change mine for me. There are a few threads on it here I'm sure someone will be along to answer.

Congrats on the purchase. Welcome to the club. I wish mine looked that good.

Engine cross bar and right side block mount will need to be removed to lower the pan. Support that side with a jackstand and loosely re-install the cross bar after the pan is removed. Safety first!

Do yourself a favour and take a clean rag and wipe the head behind the valve cover. They are notorious for leaking there, running down and imitating a rear main seal leak.

Thanks everyone for the compliments! I do have to say that the pictures do it "justice". It does show it's age up close in person, but my plan is to make it "Purdy" again. Short term plan is to sandblast the underside and hit it with POR15, and powdercoat those wheels back to white.

Mvigo- If it makes you feel any better, I didn't get lucky, I had to increase my spendng budget to snag this one!!! Now I did get lucky on the Wagoneer. 58k on the clock and cherry and paid a whopping 3,200 for it. But that was about 14 years ago and my, how things have changed!!
Mike Romain- Thanks for the tip. I actually checked that right off the bat when I got it yesterday and unfortunately the source appears to be the RMS.

I'll take more pics!
