lol, yet another problem
I need to pray to the CJ Gods tonight!!!
Ok, here we go......... I checked the timing at work today, it was 18 degrees...again this is with a mild cam. I reset it to 12 and drove it home....well almost...with the intentions of reserching timing numbers for this engine set-up! I stoped off to check on a hard top but it was off a bronco. When I tried to start the Jeep, it would not start. Temp was 220 deg. Just so happened the guy I stopped to talk to builds Mustang drag cars. After letting it cool to 195 I tried again...nope nadda!!! To make a long story short the problem was the coil died. Ok, still trying to get home...I stopped to get some gas, no problems. However when I released the emergency brake I felt a tug on something...remember this! I stopped by the NAPA dealer to get a coil (so I could return my friends coil). When I got in to leave for home, no startty...lol Then the ignition switch died (posted in another thread). I tried to by-pass the solenoid but still did not crank. Remember that "tug" I mentioned up above? Well, after calling the wife to come get me I returned on my motor cycle with a few tools. The "tug" may have been an orange wire. Don't know what it was for but when I hooked it up, then tried to start, the engine started...yeeehaaa Ain't over yet!!! Well the engine started but now when I accelerated it acted flooded. Well I nursed it to the local garage and parked it. Walked back, got my motorcycle and returned to the Jeep. Thought I would try one more time to start it up....wont start!!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It got dark and I am now at home!!!

First, bad coil
Second, bad key lock and ignition switch. Third, maybe bad Rev Limiter

Ok, just checked and I do not see a rev limiter. Doesn't mean its not there, just can't find it if it is.
My problem is that when the RPM gets to about 1,500 (no tach) the engine stalls. If I let off the gas fast enough it will not quit. Timing was at 16 deg. I reset it to 12 degress and drove it before this started. With that, here is what I have now. Set to 12 deg. Vac plugged I get 4 deg with max rpm just under engine stall at aprox 1,200 rpm. Set to 12 deg. Vac unplugged I get 16 deg with the same max rpm of aprox 1,200 before stall. Any ideas?

Looks like an Accel electronic distributor. Unsure what the coil was but now it has a standard NAPA coil. I'll check the part number if ya need it.
In this pic the coil has been replaced and not pictured. Notice the solenoid on the firewall. There are two white wires coming off the batt side. One wire goes to the alternator, unsure of the other one. Haven't had time to trace it yet. Let me know if I am not explaining it good or using wrong description names. Thanks

The one wire should go to the capacitor (condenser) which should also be grounded. The condenser is usually bolted to the coil mounting bracket. The other wire goes to the battery, like you said it does.
Did you connect the + and - on the coil right? Backwards it doesn't get a very hot spark.

!@#$%(*&^%$#
Guess the coil was not bad after all. The new coil I put on does not work properly for this system. I put the original coil back on and it runs fine. However, it may brake down when it gets hot. My temp coil is an MSD coil, it worked so I will try to find the info on that one.

I will pull off my coil in the morning and find out what it is. It is red and looks to be an MSD but is in a chrome cylinder. Now the temp coil I used is an MSD 8203. The one I purchased from NAPA that did not work is a NAPA brand, Echlin line, part number IC14.

Old coil is an MSD 8202. I replaced it this morning and all seems ok now.
Next is to check the heating and see if it will start when hot!

Running On Empty...
|
The "NO START" wire was probably the Neutral Safety Switch.
There is only ONE way to kill a coil I know of, And that is NO ELECTRICAL GROUND TO THE CYLINDER HEAD(S). If the high voltage can't exit through the spark plugs, it will discharge in the ignition coil and cause real problems. Also, have a look at your distributor 'Trigger' wires, make sure they aren't running with other wires, or too close to plug or coil wires (high voltage). This will cause 'False Triggers', and the coil will overheat. With an MSD 8202 canister coil, you are NOT running the average HEI in that Chebby, so clue us in on what distributor/ignition you ARE running...

Distributer is an Accel, part number unknown right now. It runs fine now and starts after a long hot drive home from work. Engine temps runs normal now.
On my way home from work, 25 mile drive @60mph, the temp stayed at 195-198 as long as I stayed in over drive. That over drive sure keeps it cool. If I have to drive in 4th the temp will stay at 200-205. After I shut down the engine and waited about five minutes, time it would take to fill her up with go juice, it started fine at 225 deg. I am beginning to trust it more and more!!
