lock cylinder ?

my lock cylinder just pulls out of the collum now. i can put it back in to start it. but if i let it sit for awhile it kills the battery. when i shut it off i make sure the tack goes to 0, but it still must be putting power out. the blower fan shuts of to. it is a 79 cj5 nontilt.

Just pull down the column and install a new switch. It's easy to do, and since that's all bunged up, change the switch on the bottom of the column as well to be sure you got it in one shot. Both should only take about an hour or so to do.

Where can I find a good go-by to change the lock cylinder ?
my key pulls out wheather it is running or not
I am not sure how to remove the lock cylinder, or for that matter how to remove parts of the column to get at it without ruining the steering column

Here is a good write up on taking the play out of the Jeep Tilt Wheel Columns. If you follow the links in this article they will take you to rebuilt column sites. The key mechanism is a common failure. I had to replace mine and do other works also. John S. write up is a good one for the key mech selection/type and repair steps.

i have a 78 cj 5 and i tore the column colmpletely down and reworked a lot of it. the previous owner had lost the key and ripped the column apart to uperate the ignition switch using the rod and had installed a starter button on the dash. hence no lock. click on this link, it is very useful for digging into your column, along with tips, pictures, etc.,i would really look at it, best i've found:

Hi,

Just so you know the John Strenk write up and the epiccomputer write up have links on my write up on the tilt wheel. I did not want to duplicate all the pictures and they are done well, so I just put the links to write ups. I also had to change the link for John S. and the Epic one looks like the moved???? I think there might be one or two links also. Good reference material if you have not looked.

FYI,
Fred
