Here's mine

For the record: The top is now white, the oil leak is not hers, and the tires are now better fitting 33's. Oh, and it is definitely an 8274 under there, you'll just have to take my word for it...

Guys, some real good looking Jeeps here. I'm thinking of picking up a 1977 8274 model for $500 locally. I'm curious if you guys can share some thoughts and perhaps detailed pictures on your mounts. I'm trying to plan the best way to mount a winch on my rig. I'm thinking I may bolt a verticle plate to the back of my 2"x4" 3/16ths bumper with a welded horizonal plate extending back and bolted to the top of my cross member. Thoughts?

1. See if you can get it for less - has it been rebuilt recently? Needs painting? Cleaning? New lead? Motor? Depending on how it looks on the outside, you may need to crack it open and check the gears. It's fairly easy to rebuild with the right tools, but there are a lot of heavy, difficult to maneuver parts.

2. Mine came with a CJ mount - total for both after all said and done ~$300, and my fabricator incorporated the mount into the bumper when he built it. Other than that, I'm sure you could fab a mount up but I'm not the one to ask about that.

Here's a pic. From what I understand it's been in storage for 9 or so years and hasn't been serviced recently. Doesn't come with a remote or winch plate but does work when powered on the bench. I was thinking $300 given my research but they are fairly rare up here in the north east.

The best way to fab a mount is to pick up a big piece of 8x8 angle iron. Cut it to the same width as your frame. Drill some mounting holes to match the holes in the top of your frame rails. Drill the 4 holes (4.5x10" pattern) and make the cut out for the cable. Add a couple of diagonal braces to either side of the winch, trim down the top corners, paint and bolt it on.

Here is the mounting pattern for all 8274's.

^^^^ Here's a picture of mine when I brought it home:

Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $350 for that, no matter where you are. It's mostly in good shape, but defo needs a tear down and cleaning. If they're rare, well, maybe extend your search a little farther. Try using SearchTempest.com and searching all the misspellings - "Warren" "Wench", etc. I've got half a dozen 8274s within a two hour drive of my place, half of them misspelled.

Also - how do you know the year? Mine is a '79 and it hasn't got a clutch/free spool; I thought that was added in later years...
