Let the games begin - new build 86 CJ7

Brought home a month ago and started the teardown a few weeks later. As you'll notice, this is only my second post. For the last few months, I've been trolling and learning tons of great info and gathering ideas from all the posts on this site. At first, I planned to bring this old CJ back to stock life, but now :

Only one pic for now, just to make sure posts go ok. More will follow. At this point, it's tore down all the way and the inspection is complete.Body has some rot in a few places. Motor is at the machine shop, Tranny is in good shape, just needs minor seal work. Transfer case needs a master rebuild kit. Rear axle not too bad and needs seals and one piece axles. Front axle will require major rebuild. I'll order the parts in a month or two, and for now, I'm working on the frame. Plan is to get it back to a rolling chassis and begin on the body.

Looking forward to the forums help in this build.

Congrats ,sounds like you have a plan! I got my 86 cj7 on the road a few years ago. Its good your putting some money into the engine! I also removed engine ,and went over everything ,replaced most everything that was rubber, there known for rear main seal leak, mine was shot. Timing chain was done too, but PepB had the complete timing chain kit for $13 bucks ! I had to remove water pump ,to install timing chain ,got a price on that it was like $24, and so on ..It all started with a leaking oil pan gasket,I can fill you in on what I learned if you have any questions PM me ! That's one thing I have noticed about these CJ's. Parts are pretty dang cheap!

Yeah they nickle and dime you broke.

You are probably right. Nearly everything on my Jeep works, but that doesn't mean that my "to do" list is short. With CJ's, buying the vehicle may be the least expensive part!

Good luck to the OP, it sounds like he knows what he is doing.

Sorry for the delay. First pic was too big, I think, so maybe these will come through.

The Dana 300 and 30 (last two pics) was seriously gooo'd up but cleaned up OK.

Success with the pics. Now for some experts help.

I'm working on the frame and except for the crossmember I removed, a little rust on the rear body supports and some bad nutserts, everything is in good shape except for a spring hanger. The inboard side of the hanger tweaked the frame. Measurements are all good and appears the only damage is small bend and a bent hanger on the inside. In the pic, you can see the bulge and is only on the side. The bottom of the frame is still in line.

What's the best way to repair and reattach hanger? I've seen various examples from cutting a fitted patch to adding doublers. Since I live in Florida, I don't expect to do any rockcrawling, just some sandy fun and daily driving.

My welding skills are weak so this will be a learning event for me (but fun).
