It's my understanding that part serves as a conduit from the air injection system, directed by a vacuum control to pulse air into the cat under certain conditions.

So I guess its presence or absence would depend on the year it was made and whether it was to be installed on a system with an air injection system or not.

So the catalytic converter in the action may or may not be an NOS part?

I think it is a NOS AMC replacement part, just not one specific to CJs with an air injection system. It may be for use on 76-79 CJs, I'm not all that familiar with what emissions equipment was available/required where or when.

If you think about catalytic converters nowadays - there are probably multiple choices for one model of vehicle, depending on which state you live in, which engine you have, etc. What's not in debate is that if your vehicle came with a catalytic converter, you're required by state and federal law to have a catalytic converter.

My 1981 came with a CAT, but there was no air inlet.

The Air Pump system injected air directly into the exhaust manifold.

For a 1976-equipped Jeep, the part number is 5353871

In 1981 - J5362638 CJ-7 Canada & Europe w/auto trans; J5370047, 49-states; J5370051 Catalytic converter; J5363592 for exported CJ-8; J5370049 without Calif.; J5370050 Calif.

In 1982 - J5370117 Calif.; J5370129 without Canada

In 1984-85 - 53001627

In 1986 - 52002634

Those are the only part numbers I have. I remember seeing part numbers that began with 899 in the mid 70's.

With Fred on this one as well. Not required when originally build then not required today. Same as seat belts. If it came with lap belts you can still drive it with lap belts and dont have to make it conform to today's standards. Doors as well.

I don't see anything wrong with correcting bad information. Especially when said information came from a law-breaking "authority" on the subject.

Fred, your last post was very clever and made me chuckle. Thanks.

There is certainly nothing wrong with correcting bad information, and especially from a law breaking authority, but attacks and threats aren't necessarily okay on a public forum either.

Justice but also mercy and grace

I don't know everything either, Vinny, and I'm man enough to admit it and not argue, but I get irate with those who do.

BTW, love your CJ, especially the color scheme.

No one threatened, merely informing the young hypocritical man that he is in error and an apology is in order.

I've partied with those characters in the past. They're a lot of fun.

I sincerely hope Jacob's feathers aren't ruffled, but he did ask for it, IMO.

I agree an apology is in order. Not saying we're all taking advantage of the law, but it's a cast the first stone scenario. I'm a hypocrite in the fact that I've attacked people on this forum, so I have no stone to throw. But if I was Jacob, id be hoping for a little mercy and grace right now.

Flynes - You have exhibited the lowest level of character and maturity I've ever seen on this forum. You took a simple subject and turned it into a public vile personal vendetta against an individual. Plus you have that whiny little pet gerbil, Matt1981CJ7 climbing around your A$$ egging you on.

You should all be proud of yourselves.

Simply Disgusting

Moderators - feel free to delete this post, but consider deleting Flynes personal attacks also.
