I bought a new one in May 1985, was told that that was the last model year (at that time). Then the 1986 came out...the good ones had a Dana 44 rear and T176 4 speed. Over the years, I have seen those stickers placed all over the dash.

My '77 now has the widetracks (rear Dana 44) out of a 1986.

People claim to have rearends outta 86 all the time. I just dont see how that many would get rid of their rearend and why their jeep is being parted out 10 years older than some?

The 44 end of 86 CJs were one's probably to be called last of great breed. Seems right around time of swap for rearend stickers started coming out? I had an 86 but had no sticker and no 44 either.

The last CJ7's were produced in '86 as "Liberty Editions". They were available in Red or White only, with gold "Liberty Edition" decals, and they had garnet red interiors. They did have the DANA 44 rear ends. I don't remember the actual production numbers, but I do kick myself daily for trading mine for a Ramcharger in 1989. I'm new to this forum, so if I figure out how to post a pic. I'll post one of my red '86.

I'd like to see that picture. It's not too hard to sign up for a photobucket account and post pics. If I can figure it out, anyone can. Good luck.

The last 2 pics. are stock except for the Stainless Steel package, Daylighters, Rear Bumper, & Bug Shield. These are actually pictures of the 35mm photos from 1986-1988.

I bought a new black one in 1985. They were saying that was going to be the last year, then they went ahead and produced the '86. I had a friend with a copper colored one with a Dana 44 and T176 4 speed though. I dont recall ever seeing a "lLiberty Edition" anywhere. Was that a regional or Dealership thing? I have seen a "Wolverine" Edition though.

From what I recall they were a limited production nationwide. If my memory serves me correctly, Jeep even advertised them (once again) as the final editions. I purchased mine new at Stan Mize Jeep Eagle in Schererville Indiana.

I have a Dana 44, but the tub was replaced with a fiberglass and the dash with a stainless. Last digits from vin are 142474. Our shop has a vinyl cutter and I was thinking of making some sort of decal to put on my cj that says something regarding last of the breed.

I have a 1986 cj7. It has the dana 44 rear, and the "real" last of a great breed sticker by the left speaker. It has chrome or stainless steel everywhere inside and out. 172,000 miles. Power steering, power brakes, tilt, windshield washer fluid, variable wipers etc.
What are these late model cjs worth? I was thinking about selling it. Shoot me a PM

I remember local newspaper ads that advertised the Liberty Editions as the last of the CJ's. I emailed Four Wheeler Magazine and recieved this response from Jim Allen:

Subject:

Liberty Edition CJ-7

Priority:

Normal

Date:

Thursday, March 31, 2011 8:11 AM

Size:

3 KB

Hi Rich,

Your query to Four Wheeler got shuttled to me but I can't tell you much more
than you already know. I have seen one Liberty Edition recently, a red one,
though I don't have much documentation on them. Generally I can say they were
either a national or regional SPO (Special Production Order) offered to dealers.
Sometimes these specials appeared in only one part of the country. Sometimes
only at one dealer (usually a big one in that case... I have seen some unique
ones from a Denver dealer). Basically, they ordered up a bunch of jeeps with
certain trim and equipment levels, added some special decals (sometimes
installed at the dealer level) and there you go. Like you said, it appears the
LIberty Editions were '86s and came with red or white exterior paint (lI have
seen pics of a white one) and with a Garnet Red interior. It's interesting to
note that the one I saw was in southern Wisconsin, not all that far from
Indiana. As a collectable, they would be a bit more valuable than an equivalent
standard model, but the condition of the decals is paramount to any premium over
a standard Jeep. They would make an interesting variation for a serious late CJ
collector but probably not a high dollar unit in and of itself.

Jim Allen
