Key lock cylinder won't turn to start/run

I'm new to the forum and here's my first question. I have a 1984 CJ7, 258, 5 speed with a tilt steering wheel. Yesterday I couldn't move the key from the run position to the lock position although I could turn the engine off. Wtih some luck I did finally get to the locked position and was able to get the key out. Now I can't get to the start position! Do you think replacing the lock cylinder will solve this problem or there something else going on inside the steering column? Thanks for any help.

I just slap or hit the column and it unlocks the key position, but I can always start or stop the Jeep

It may be that the ignition lock rack has broken and is jammed in the column. If you do a search for "motormite 82311" you should find the parts I am talking about. The tilt column has a sort of rack and pinion setup. I have a post on or about 9-26-09.

I took the key cylinder out only to find out it was the ignition switch. I didn't realize that the connection was mechanical. Thanks for your advise.

Yeah there is a rod that runs down to the ign switch. (at least on the non tilt ones)

The whole system is a pain.
Cheers,
