Just putter all the way home, PLEASE HELP

Off and on I have a prob with my cj7, last night I started driving down the highway and was cruisin along smooth and all of a sudden I could feel the jeep start to slow up, it almost felt heavy like it was struggling, and then this wierd chugg noise happened and the jeep reallly got weak and I had to pull over. I started it back up and just kind of putted to my destination. Then when I woke to drive home it was even worse I basically had no power or speed when pressing the pedal. But I just chugged and putted the whole way home. Occasionally when off the highway it would feel alive agian and really move, but then die back down agian. I dont know what the problem is, this is DD and I need it to run but I really am stumped with this problem, and it only happens on highways.

Its going to my mechanic on tuesday to have my HEI distributor dropped in and timed so I will also tell him about this problem but I would like to get your opinions and advice first.
Thanks
Doug

Start with the basics, crap in the fuel filter, clean / replace plugs and so on.
Did the 'chung' sound like an inlet backfire or a mechanical/metallic 'chung'?

fuel filter was what my dad suggested. Im not sure what an inlet back fire would sound like, but it was metal it sounds almost like some kind loud deep clicking pop noise and the jeep seems to loose all power for a split second, not electrical power, engine. ill be replacing the plugs after my mechanic drops in new distributor.

Hole in piston, steel head gaskets are prone to failure, I had two. Fuel float level stuck or out of adjustment, garbage in the bowl.

Just have the mechanic do a compression check/leak down check on all cylinders while he has it & to let U you know the readings. If U can stand there & write down the readings on each cylinder.

How many miles on the engine?
What yr.

The carb float could need adjusting, I had a similar problem when getting on the hwy it was ok but when I went to accelerate it starved cause the float some how was off.

P.S. Get a second opinion on all work!

from your description it's hard to tell if its fuel (gas problem) or fire (ignition problem). In your first post it sounded like the problem is intermittent....runs like crap most of the time now, but fixes itself occassionally. Is this true?? If this is true do you notice what conditions there are when it happens? (engine is hot/cold, driving slow/fast, turing/straight, steady speed/accel/decel, etc.

broken cat maybe..??????I would have to suggest that you tell the mech. all the symptoms you've had, like the whistling, and whatnot and have him fix it..We can only suggest things but it sounds like you need someone more experianced needs to look at it..
