junkyard motorcraft 2100 ( help?!)
 
So I'm getting tired of my awful Carter carb and went to the junk yard to find a motorcraft 2100 I was able to find two with the 1.08 on the side. One is missing the motorcraft emblem on the top of the bowl but has working linkages but the plates that open and close with the throttle are rusted. and the other is much cleaner but linkages are rusted shut.. I guess my main question is when looking at junkyard carbs what should I look for tochoose the best one?

If linkages work, that is #1 priority. You get one with a seized shaft it's junk. Doesn't matter what they look like as long as they work. Of the ones I've used, the best running one was the worst looking one. Get it, clean it up, toss a kit in it, and bolt it on. If it's worn out at least you have a core. One with a seized throttle shaft isn't even acceptable as a core.

Okay thanks, the one that has a working linkage doesn't have the motorcraft emblem on it but had the 1.08 on the side and is almost the same looking as the other could it be an autolite and that's why it isn't there and they also had a few good ones that had a larger size I think it was 1.14 or 1.24 is that to much for the 258?

Use the 1.08 you have. Bigger will work, but won't be right.

Okay and just the motorcraft stamp could just be worn off correct? That would explain why it doesn't say motorcraft on it or it could be an autolite version

Honestly I've never even looked for a motorcraft logo on mine. They used these carbs for decades and there are so many different varients there's no telling what all you'll see. What did it come off of? Got any pics?

Well I didn't get to take it off the vehicle, the junk yard just had a big section of carbs so I went threw it and got the two with 1.08 I got both of them for 40, ill take pictures and post them when I get home I know for sure one can off a Ford 302 though

Well you did well getting two for $40. Mine came off of a 79 Mustang with a V6, not sure about the other one. If they look similar and both have 1.08 on them I'm sure both of them are just different variations of the MC2100/2150.

Looks like a 2100 to me (actually I think the thing on the top right in your picture is supposed to be some kind of altitude adjuster thingy that makes this carb a 2150, but same difference).

Take it apart, boil it in lemon juice, put it back together using the rebuild kit, and bolt it on.

What are you using for adapter plate, throttle cable, and air cleaner?

I'm gonna use the Mr gasket part number 1937 for the adapter, whatever I can find at the parts store for the cleaner and I haven't decided on the throttle cable, still trying to figure it out

When I did mine I used an "L" bracket from the hardware store to convert the 2100 from a rear pull to a down pull like the stock carb. I drilled out one of the holes in the bracket to fit snugly over the existing linkage ball on the throttle arm. Then I attached a new linkage ball on the end of the bracket and hooked it to the stock linkage. Lastly, I clamped the bracket and linkage together and drilled a new hole through both then bolted them together.

It's kind of hard to explain but if you are still working on it next week I'll snap a pic for you when I get home.

FWIW, I used the transdapt 2037. Looked better to me than the Mr Gasket

Throttle cable from 1980 CJ7 with V8 will swap right in and hook up without having to fab up a linkage

Get a Spectre open filament air cleaner. They're cheap. I cut the bottom out of my factory (non power brake equipped) air cleaner and bolted the bottom part of the sceptre cleaner to my stock housing, so it looks stock and I have an enclosed air filter element with cold air intake from the grill.

The V8 throttle cable goes right in place, but adds a little "oomph" to pushing the gas pedal one one of my Jeeps given the spring on one of my 2100's. The other Jeep is much easier to push, so I imagine it's just different throttle springs on the two different MC2100's I'm using.

I think that your way will give a little leverage and require a little less push to give it gas on the one I have that is harder to push.

Works fine, just makes it hard to feather the throttle.

Yeah, I tried the V8 cable but they must have given me the wrong one. Rather than pay the re-stocking fee twice I opted to fab up my own. Tool about 10 minutes and cost about $3.
