Looks like Jr. has an awesome Jeep! I never knew they came with dual tanks! I have heard that drums are just as good as disc. I swapped mine because I never could keep them adjusted right when Iwas younger. Probably didn't know what I was doing! Always made for an exciting stop! I can't wait too see what you two do with this thing!

Dual tanks weren't a factory option. A previous owner has just added a 55-70 under seat tank as a secondary tank. Pretty easy to do using factory parts.

More of a resto-mod than a pure restoration. Upgraded a few things in the interest of safety and reliability. Like power steering, power brakes, front disks (complete knuckle-out swap from a 78 CJ5), 3 point seat belts, etc.

Jr's Jeep (304) has points for the dizzy and I'm going to mention to him about changing it out for electronic (although I wouldn't mind it).

Without going to the HEI, will a newer, say 1980 dizzy work and will he have to take the cam gear off the old one (I've heard horror stories about the dizzy gear eating up the cam gear on some HEi's-that is why I would recommend to him just get a factory replacement and do the cap etc upgrade)

Jr also cut the front bumper off.


Question, he wants to go full width axles and we are looking at two Waggys for the price of $400.00 complete (except one is missing just the motor, the other has a 360).

Is there a kit for this that will work on his '74 CJ5.

OK, did a compression test (WOT) on Jr's 304 and we need some help here w/the results.

Results Drivers Side Front to Back (no smoke from this side):
122-clean plug
122-clean plug
125-plug a little fouled
105-clean plug

Results Passenger Side front to Back (big time smoke from this side):
116-clean plug
125-clean plug
115-plug fouled big time
125-clean plug

Seems like the passenger side cylinder is the one that's doing all the smoking.

He is running a Autolite 65 plug and we want to try a hotter plug but not sure what number to run. I called O'Reilly and the guy suggested a Autolite 866.

We would like to try the hotter plug so he can drive it to the pressure wash station before we do a valve job.

Any thoughts?

Wet test on cylinders in question. All plugs in on both tests except the cylinder in question. WOT.

Results Drivers Side Front to Back (no smoke from this side):
122-clean plug
122-clean plug
125-plug a little fouled
105-clean plug - Added some WD-40 and the cylinder went up to 110lbs.

Results Passenger Side front to Back (big time smoke from this side):
116-clean plug
125-clean plug
115-plug fouled big time - Added some WD-40 and the cylinder went up to 124lbs.
125-clean plug

That plug came w/the Jeep.

I installed new plug wires and Autolite 65 plugs.

Still smokes out of the right bank.

I let it idle for a while to maybe burn the oil oil out of the cylinder (maybe 10min). Then I drove it around the 3 acres and it kept smoking.

I then stopped and help the throttle @ about 1500 rpm and punched it a few times. Big time smoke and also when I took my foor off the accellerator pedal I did see some smoke (not much but visible in the daylight) coming out.

Here are the new compression numbers with ALL the plugs out/WOT/engine cold.

Jr's Jeep is a 3spd/304 and I have a question.

Question, if he pulls a 360 that has a auto behind it, can he take the pressure plate (where the clutch rides/motor turns the tranny) off the 304 and bolt it to the 360 or does he have to get one for a 360?

Question, will the same work for a 401?

Also, will his bell housing will bolt up to the 360 and the 401?

Amc Motors are externally balanced so you will need to find a pressure plate for a 360. Externally all of the amc blocks are the same so the bell housing is interchangeable from the 304 up to the 401.

Thank you. Would I also need a new H-Balancer or can I use the one that came w/the engine/AUTO trans?

As long as you keep the H-balancer with the correct engine. Got to have a 304 flexplate/pressure plate and a 304 H-balancer on a 304 engine. Same with a 360 and 401. The same H-balancer can be used for a stick or automatic.
