Picked up a new piece to the puzzle that is my CJ. I found a 1978 Wagoneer D44 front that has been narrowed to fit a CJ for $250 on Craigslist. The housing looks new, the PO did a great job cleaning it up. The axle came disassembled but with all its components (including new spring plates, u-bolts, and bearings). I already have a HP44 from a 1979 Bronco that was intended for the YJ that I am going to steal the outers from to use on the CJ. The Ford components seem much beefier and then I can run a 5x5.5 bolt pattern instead of the 6 (not to mention I have a tub full of brand new brakes, lock outs, etc). I also assembled the Aussie locker I had for the YJ...

The new D44...

The pile of parts it came with...

The Wagoneer knuckle vs. the Ford knuckle...

These will hopefully give me a little more stopping power than the 9" drums...

Box of D44 parts...

Assembled Aussie locker in new 4.10 & up carrier...

A couple of photos of this weeks work...

Painted the Dana 44 housing using Rustoleum Engine Enamel. Primed, based and cleared this paint lays down REALLY well...

Cleaned, repaired and painted the door panels. It is amazing what a difference an angle grinder and some rattle cans make to a 50+ year old piece of sheet metal...

One of my co-workers helping me cut out some rot on the driver door...

Cleaned up the Ford spindles, it is nice having a lathe around...

Hopefully I have a productive weekend ahead. The AX15 is going back together and I plan on finishing the 4.0 tear down.

Subscribed.... I have a 1960 CJ6 also and coming up with a build plan similar to yours.

How do you plan fit the 4.0 in it? Later model front end? Cutting the firewall? both?

I was looking into motor swaps and after some measuring that was the only way I could see a 4.0 going in.

Yeah, the long block will be a tight fit in this thing. First off the radiator I have is not quite as deep as the CJ's current unit. You can gain a few inches from cutting the steel shroud on the inside of the grill. I am also using an electric fan which is slimmer than the 4.0's mechanical fan. Even so yes I will be cutting into the firewall. I have to completely re-do the floors anyway so most of it will already be cut out. The only thing I have to look into more closely (its a concern but not a major one) is where the shifters will pop up. It is a longer drivetrain I don't know how far they will go...

Chipped away at the drivetrain a little more this weekend.

Finished up the AX15. I am use to dealing with automatics, this thing was a piece of cake...

Got the 4.0L mostly torn down, everything looks good so far...

Painted some of the outer...

Pretty successful weekend hopefully I will keep up the momentum over the long weekend haha

Needless to say I have been slacking on the thread lately. Just to get everybody up to speed...

First off I finished dismantling the 4.0L. The block and internals are in good shape so I am ordering new bearings and rings to bolt it back together

I disassembled the head and cleaned it out. I am running an aftermarket header so I decided to gasket match and polish the exhaust ports (the intake ports are nearly matched from the factory).

I order a special treat for the ol' 242... Comp Cam kit to give the motor a more potent low end...

I thought this was pretty cool. My father surprised me with a 1962 Jeep CJ6 brochure (it is supposedly original and in fantastic shape). It has all the specs listed on the back...

I am in the process of patching up a rust hole in the driver door... It needs some more work haha...

I am also working on building new poly trans and motor mounts...

Finally, I made a good find at work today (I work for a transmission re-manufacturer). We received a manual transmission core last week that the company was originally going to scrap (we only deal with automatics). The PTO covers and massive yoke caught my attention so I decided to go ahead and ID it. It turns out what I came across is a late model SM465. The boss said I could keep it so I threw it in the Ram and headed home. So far I have only popped off the PTO covers but the trans is dry and the only visible synchro appears to be brand new. I am thinking this unit has been rebuilt but never run (the paint on the yoke is still fresh). I am going to open it up tomorrow to inspect it further...

That D44 looks to be narrowed to CJ wide track width. What's your plan for the rear axle (I may have missed it in the thread)?
