I decided to move the rear shock mounts from the U-bolt plate that's under the spring to mounting them on the axle itself. They seem to catch allot of things hanging down under the spring like that so it seems like a good idea to move them.

I started out making some simple brackets. I could have bought them somewhere but that would have meant not getting them done today. So they're homemade.


Had to do a little fitting to get the driver's side to fit right since there's a step in the tube where Currie welds a brace for the center section out onto the axle tube itself. That all went pretty easy.



Got them both welded on solid. I set them on there so the bottom of the bracket won't be any lower than the bottom of the axle tube. Now it needs to be sandblasted and painted. Get is all put back together and that will wrap this part of the project up.

All of the pictures come from me. I E-mail them to Jim so he has something to post. Jim is too busy working on Crabtree tool parts he just doesn't have time. Sorry to let the cat out of the bag Jim.

Jim, on the Detroit in the rear, I think it depends on how the jeep will be used most, and how often on slick ( snow and ice ) hard roads. As you probably know, with the Detroit a steady speed around corners is the key. Applying the accelerator or backing off it would lock things together.

I have 2 trutracs, one in the rear of a full sized GMC Jimmy, and one in the front of the "pretty" trail jeep. If strength of the trutracs is a concern, I wouldn't worry about it breaking. It's 1 tough unit.

Man, that just makes me want to weld up the truss for my 8.8... been so busy, I haven't been able to practice welding since the last time I PM'd you...

... I guess I'm gonna have to fix that too…….

Got the Detroit True Trac in today. This is going in the front end. I'll leave the Detroit Locker in the rear. Front one is for Ford 9" 31 splines just like the rear. One less thing to buy!

Just kidding. The Detroit/True Trac combination is going to serve you well. What ratio are you running again?

One step closer to a roller, I've never set up a 9" . Do you set the pinion up with shims or a crush sleeve? And the pinion bearings the same way with shims.

That trutrac looks a lot different than a GM 10 bolt or a Dana 30.

You know Mike I thought about making lockers, really. I've read that these are not MADE IN THE USA anymore. That really frost me if it's true. I'm running 4:11s. Might be a little low for 32" tires but I'm sure the nest set of skins will be bigger.

I'll be equipped for that rollover Bill.

You do shim the pinion except it's shimmed a little different than most. The shims are in between the pinion flange and the housing so that part is much easier. I still have a cruch sleeve though.

It looks different than the pictures in Simmit too but the invoice says True Trac.

I would say it is. A quick Google search showed a lot of photos, most of them said the photo was not the same as a actual part.
I did find one picture. That's the one Jim has.

In regard to the locker or TrueTrac. Here's a picture of both. The Detroit Locker is installed with the gears and the TrueTrac is closest. The locker is made much stronger from what I see and that's always been the case, not to detract from the TrueTrac though. Anyway here's what they look like.



Also while I was already fairly dirty from my hard, laborious, strenuous and dedicated days work. Did I miss anything? Well sandblasting is a dirty job so since it's the end of the day I took care of that chore on the 9" housing. Hope to get it primed tomorrow.
